LAST WEEK FOR SCRIPT CONTEST SUBMISSIONS

I know that some people are hanging on to their script, polishing every last word, making sure that it really is as good as it possibly can be.

That?s good. You only get one chance to make your mark with a script, so don?t send in something that is only half baked and expect people to light the oven for you.

But there comes a point when that stops being beneficial. When you?re just fiddling and tweaking and polishing for the sake of it.

When I was at university we all did that with my first few essays ? Fear of Submission. It?s well a well known condition!

But there comes a time when you just have to jump.

There is now just under one week to submit a script for the Screenwriting Goldmine contest. Submissions close at 1pm London time on Thursday 12th July and there will be no exceptions.

Don?t miss out on your chance to win the thunderous acclaim and rocket-fuelled career boost of placing in this international script contest.

And if that considerable moral high ground isn?t enough, the prizes include cash, Final Draft software, Raindance Weekend Seminars, IMDB memberships, script consultancies ? and most importantly, meetings with some of the key players in the script market in the UK

What?s more, as this is the first year this contest has run, the number of entries it has received is far, far less than other more well established contests. That is GREAT NEWS for you, as it means the odds of winning for any given script are MUCH HIGHER ? in your favour.

IS READING BAD FOR YOU?

I?ve been questioning the idea that reading books is an Inalienable Good for a while now.

Obviously reading widely is the one of THE best routes to get a wide education about other points of view and lives ? but can there really come a point at which reading too much (or watching movies, or any excessive consumption of story, actually) becomes a dangerous, narcotic, escape route from reality?

This blog thinks so. Food for thought?

NETWORKING IS KEY

I?ve said it before, and I?ll say it again, but the reason I?m saying it this week is that I heard from a Goldminer yesterday.

Last Autumn she was completely new to the whole world of making drama.

She came on one of the weekend courses I run with Philip Shelley, and that was, I believe, her first exposure to this industry.

I met up with her yesterday, and now she?s basically one of the exec producers on a new Brit movie with a budget of almost ?1m plus a well known director.

She?s got herself into this position by the simple expedient of going to things of making friends. She?s spent har last year going to industry courses, and events, and got to know people, and connected with them.

Obviously she has a lot to give ? her talent and professional background is in raising money, which means she brings a lot to the table ? but at heart all she?s been doing is making friends. The big contact who was most helpful she met at a small course in her small home town, a long way from London!

So, for those of you who feel you don?t stand a chance because you don?t live in Hollywood or London, it can be done! But you do have to get out there and make the effort.

Attend industry events. Even in your home town, Get to know people there. Make friends with people there. The most amazing doors can open.

COME TO SKYROS AND WRITE WITH ME FOR 11 DAYS

And speaking of industry events. I?m teaching on this one. Come along and spend a week or so on a great workshop on a beautiful Greek Island:

CLAIMING YOUR RESIDUALS

UK writers with work broadcast on TV, make sure you tell http://www.alcs.co.uk/ about every single episode ? don?t rely on them to pick it up. You?ll lose money if they don?t.

And make sure your credits, and some form of contact details, are kept up to date on IMDB. I?ve heard that more than one writer recently received several hundreds of pounds in foreign levies from the Writers Guild of America.

Apparently they use http://www.imdb.com as a prime source to track people down.
