KC Diocese Communications Chief Leaving Post ? 20 Pounds Of ...

The voice and pen of the Kansas City Catholic Diocese, Rebecca Summers, is leaving the job, according to the Catholic Key, the diocesan newspaper.

"Summers, director of communications, will become the director of marketing for Cristo Rey High School" , the newsppaper reported.

Summers handled the local church?s communications with news organizations after the Fr Shawn Ratigan scandal broke.

Ratigan is facing state and federal charges stemming from child abuse and child pornography charges the priest is facing.

She also handled coverage following the indictment of Bishop Robert Finn on charges he failed to promptly report potential child abuse fears to Missouri state officials.

The newspaper story says "Summers began as director of marketing and communications for the Diocesan School Office in July 1995, and became the diocese?s first full time director of communications in January 1999."

"In that role, she has helped schools, the report continues, "parishes and the diocese tell their stories to the broader community, in times both good and bad."

The Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP) said "shuffling staffers and titles is one way embattled bishops often try to blunt reform and mollify parishioners, by pretending they?re making real changes. We suspect this is what Bishop Finn is doing."
