Pfizer earnings top estimates, reiterates forecast

(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc reported second-quarter earnings slightly ahead of estimates on Tuesday as the largest U.S. drugmaker lines up a business split that could lead to the spinoff of its generics division.

The company, hit by falling sales of its now off-patent cholesterol fighter Lipitor, reaffirmed its financial outlook for the year.

For the second quarter, adjusted income fell 10 percent to $4.00 billion, or 56 cents a share, from $4.45 billion, or 59 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue dropped 7 percent to $12.97 billion.

Analysts, on average, expected second-quarter income of 55 cents a share, on revenue of $13.01 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Atlantic Equities analyst Richard Purkiss said improved profit margins, helped by cost controls, were responsible for the slightly better-than-expected profit.

Pfizer said it planned to separate its commercial operations into two units for branded products and a third for generics. Chief Executive Ian Read has been reviewing the group's structure after divesting its nutrition and animal health businesses.

Read said Pfizer's new model would help revitalize its innovation-based core drugs business, while enhancing the value of consumer and off-patent established brands and maximizing the use of capital.

Pfizer's generics business, which represents 17 percent of total sales, has far lower profit margins than its patent-protected drugs.

Many analysts have urged Pfizer to spin off generics so it can focus on core branded pharmaceuticals, although such a move is unlikely before 2016.

Within the core drugs division, revenues from cancer medicines increased by 28 percent in the second quarter, helped by new products like Inlyta and Xalkori.

Read also said he expected business in emerging markets to accelerate in the second half of the year, led by China.

"From a total company view, we are tracking to our expectations for the full year and continue to capitalize on the investments we are making to better position Pfizer for long-term success," he added.

Pfizer reiterated that it expected full-year earnings of $2.10 to $2.20 per share.

LIPITOR, PREVNAR TAKE HITS

It reported global sales of $12.97 billion, slightly lower than Wall Street estimates of $13.02 billion.

The 7 percent fall in quarterly revenue reflected an operational decline of 4 percent and an unfavorable impact from foreign exchange of 3 percent.

The biggest hit came from losses of exclusivity on Lipitor, while shifts in government purchasing patterns for bulk orders of Pfizer's Prevnar pneumococcal vaccine also took a toll.

The U.S. drugmaker's determination to reshape its business is part of a wider trend among pharmaceutical companies around the world to divest slower-growing and maturing operations.

Abbott Laboratories' decision to split off its innovative drugs into AbbVie Inc, in particular, has fueled a rethinking across the industry as to whether other companies or groups of investors may be better owners for certain assets.

In Europe, GlaxoSmithKline Plc is also selling off certain non-core brands, and in April it took a similar tack to Pfizer by opting to bundle many of its established drugs into a new unit.

Last November, Pfizer sold its nutrition business to Nestle SA for $11.85 billion in cash, and in February spun off its animal health business into a new company called Zoetis Inc.

Washington and big box retailers in high stakes showdown

Retail

Mayor Vincent Gray of Washington, D.C.

J. Scott Applewhite / AP file

Mayor Vincent Gray of Washington, D.C.

Wal-Mart has a reputation to protect: Its legendary, bare-knuckled labor tactics.

That's why the world?s largest retailer has threatened to scrap at least three of six stores planned for the nation?s capital if the city signs into law a bill requiring big-box stores to pay workers at least $12.50 an hour. Six other retailers have jumped on board, sending a letter to D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray that warned, ?Any future plans for retail expansion in the city must be revisited.?

It?s a showdown labor experts predict will be repeated in other cities, as cash-strapped municipalities try to pare back public assistance for the working poor and large retailers look to America?s cities for future growth.

Proponents of the wage bill, formally called the Large Retailer Accountability Act, call Wal-Mart a bully.

?They are known to be quite resolute, willing to take local losses in order to maintain a reputation,? said Gary Burtless, labor economist at the Brookings Institution. ?It would be a huge blow to that negotiating stance if they ceded to demands from the District of Columbia.?

Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research agreed: ?If they?re seen to just be making idle threats after they?ve built up such a reputation, that would be a huge cost to them.?

Robin Sherk, Kantar Retail?s director of Retail Insights, offered an alternative for Wal-Mart -- that it offer grocery delivery service operating out of a suburban base, or downsize its planned Supercenters so its store footprints fall below the 75,000-square-foot threshold stipulated by the bill. Walmart Neighborhood Markets average about 38,000 square feet.

?Wal-Mart definitely views the urban environment as a growth area,? Sherk said. ?I don?t think they?ll give up on D.C. ... They?ll evaluate other options.?

Retail and labor experts agree that the chain will walk away, taking a loss if necessary, on some or all of its planned stores if the wage bill prevails.

This prospect strikes fear in the heart of local developers, who were counting on Wal-Mart?s draw as an anchor tenant to attract other stores and financing.

Developer Gary Rappaport told the Washington Post, ?If there?s not a Wal-Mart at Skyland (Town Center), then Skyland is not able to go forward at this time.?

Wal-Mart said that in addition to abandoning the three projects still in the planning stage, it ?will start to review the financial and legal implications on the three stores already under construction.?

Typically, a store would be locked into a lease agreement once lenders come on board and construction begins. Getting out of that could be expensive for Wal-Mart at this stage ? two of the stores were scheduled to open this fall ? but developers could be left holding the bag if they were so eager to get Wal-Mart on board that they wrote an option to terminate into their contracts.

?When you?re trying to attract a retailer like Wal-Mart, you do a lot of unconventional things,? Maloney said. ?You will need to stretch a bit.?

City administrators have been trying to get Skyland off the ground for more than two decades now, and the prospect of another setback frustrates Victor Hoskins, deputy mayor for planning and economic development. Washington, D.C. has invested between $25 million and $30 million in the project.

Hoskins said other big-box chains were considering abandoning D.C. for the suburbs if the mayor signs the bill. ?We?ve heard from a couple of large format retailers," he said. "They?re concerned.?

Hoskins argued that the jobs and sales tax revenue big-box retailers would bring are something the city can?t afford to lose, but supporters of the wage bill charge that big-box stores like Wal-Mart inflict hidden costs on taxpayers and municipalities.

?We want to make sure we don?t allow large retailers to come in and pay poverty wages ? which basically is going to compel this government to pick up all the social costs,? said Vincent Orange, Washington, D.C. council member at large. ?I know that the wage Wal-Mart wants to pay will continue to have D.C. residents seeking public assistance in a number of ways.?

Wal-Mart says its average non-supervisory worker pay is nearly $12 an hour, but since that doesn?t include part-time or temp workers, critics call the number inflated. In 2011, research company IBISWorld estimated that Walmart sales associates earned an average of $8.81 an hour, and department managers earned an average of $11.22 an hour.

Orange pointed to a report issued in May by the Democratic staff of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which said every Wal-Mart Supercenter ?may cost taxpayers about one million dollars in higher usage of public-assistance programs? by workers and their families.

Burtless, the Brookings labor economist, concurred: ?As a nation, we?ve expanded programs that provide income supplements to low-wage workers ... It does work to the benefit of Wal-Mart as well as other low-wage companies in the U.S.?

Despite retailers? protestations, experts predict that the pull of the market will eventually be too much to resist.

?For [Wal-Mart] to continue to grow in America, it needs to grow in urban areas,? including Northeastern and Midwestern cities with strong pro-union roots, said Paul Osterman, professor of human resources and management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ?That?s why these fights are so bitter.?

Cleveland kidnapping victim appears at music festival

By Kim Palmer

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - One of the three women starved, beaten and sexually assaulted for years after being kidnapped by former Ohio school bus driver Ariel Castro made a surprise public appearance on Saturday at a concert in Cleveland.

Amanda Berry, along with Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, was freed from Castro's home in a rundown area of Cleveland on May 6. The women began disappearing in 2002 and had been bound in chains and ropes during their confinement, authorities said.

Smiling and wearing a black t-shirt, jeans and sunglasses, the 27-year-old Berry received raucous applause as she walked on the stage at the RoverFest 2013 event in downtown Cleveland after being announced by local radio host Rover.

Berry pointed a finger skyward and waved and shook the hands of some of the cheering concert-goers.

"I told her she had a little bit of time to make up on the partying and you guys would help her out tonight," Rover said according to a video posted on YouTube by radio station WMMS.

Berry did not speak before exiting the stage. She was later called back by the rapper Nelly when he finished his set.

Her appearance came two days after Castro pleaded guilty to hundreds of charges of kidnapping and rape in a deal to avoid the death penalty. The move spared Berry, DeJesus, 23, and Knight, 32, from having to testify at a trial.

Castro has agreed to a sentence of life in prison without parole as part of his plea deal. His sentencing is scheduled for August 1.

For BMW, i3 hatchback is mark of electric car ... - Automotive News

BMW's estimated $2.7 billion i3 program is a milestone for the world's biggest luxury carmaker as well as the electric car industry.

BERLIN (Reuters) -- Costly gamble or in tune with the public mood? BMW is set to launch its first all-electric car, hoping to stir demand for a pricey luxury model just as some other producers hit hurdles in selling electric propulsion.

On Monday, BMW will take the wraps off its i3 electric hatchback in a series of glitzy events in London, New York and Beijing.

It will arrive in U.S. showrooms in the second quarter of 2014.

Monday's promotional events underscore the seriousness of BMW's long-term ambitions.

"We're at the dawn of this electric era," sales chief Ian Robertson said during a test drive outside Munich on July 15.

Coming after an estimated $2.7 billion investment program, the i3 launch is a milestone for the world's biggest luxury carmaker as well as the electric car fraternity.

"This is a significant move for BMW," said Lincoln Merrihew, vice president of transportation at market researchers Millward Brown Digital. "They're launching a new brand in a new segment with new vehicles ... And they're going all in."

Yet consumers remain skeptical about electric vehicles due to their cost -- the i3 will start at 34,950 euros, a fifth above the base version of BMW's best-selling 3-Series -- and concerns about their driving range.

In the United States, the i3 will be priced at $41,350 before any federal or state incentives and without delivery charges, which currently are $925, BMW said.

Market leader Nissan, Toyota, General Motors and VW's Audi have trimmed electric-car plans or have had to offer aggressive pricing to spur their middling sales.

Specialist makers have also borne the brunt of slack demand, with Fisker Automotive Inc. and Coda Automotive both having filed for bankruptcy, along with charging network firm Better Place.

But there are signs too that electric cars are winning adherents, albeit from a low base.

Ten-year old Tesla Motors Inc. delivered nearly 5,000 of its Model S -- priced at $70,000 before a U.S. Federal tax credit -- in the first quarter, helping it to its first-ever quarterly profit. Its shares have quadrupled in value this year.

German target

Perhaps the strongest motivating force behind the technology is government enthusiasm for low-emission transportation. In BMW's home market, Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel has set a target of 1 million electric cars on the country's roads by the end of the decade.

Ever-tightening emissions rules in the European Union and California also offer powerful incentives for carmakers to add electrified or highly efficient vehicles to their fleets.

BMW then has reason to enter the market with its four-seater i3, due to hit dealerships in November. The car is built around a carbon fiber-based shell and an aluminum chassis, offering bench seats and eucalyptus wood paneling.

The company spent at least 2 billion euros ($2.7 billion) on developing the "i" series, analysts say, which the company has trademarked through to a series number i9 -- hinting at the scope of its plans.

BMW is betting that the 530 million euros it has invested in production of the i range will pay off in the race with Audi, which narrowed BMW's sales lead in the first half and has pledged to snatch the luxury sales crown by about 2020.

The i3 could upend Audi, which abandoned planned electric versions of its two-seater R8 supercar and the diminutive A1 hatchback after parent VW last year opted to promote hybrids in response to EU emissions limits.

If BMW wants to prevail in the race with Audi and Daimler's Mercedes-Benz, it needs to be at the pinnacle of technology, said Henner Lehne, Frankfurt-based analyst with IHS Automotive, adding that the push into electric mobility may foster BMW's image as a high-tech, cutting-edge pioneer.

"The i series is a true halo project for BMW," said Lehne. "If it succeeds, it will firm up BMW's lead on innovation."

Range extender

EVs so far remain a niche product, thought of by many as offering few concrete advantages and with some serious drawbacks against gasoline or diesel-powered cars. Yet some analysts believe the i3 could attract tech-savvy, status-conscious buyers, or become a second car for more affluent households.

BMW insists the i3's 160-kilometer (100 miles) range is enough for drivers based in urban or suburban areas. The car recharges in less than an hour at special stations and up to eight hours from a wall socket at home.

An optional diesel or petrol range extender kicks in when the battery runs low, allowing the i3 to travel 300 kilometers.

Aware that other EV manufacturers overreached with overly rosy forecasts, BMW hasn't given a sales target for the i3, saying only that it aims to be a significant player.

Output of battery-powered vehicles may more than quadruple to 787,000 by 2020, says market consultancy IHS, but the volume would still be less than 1 percent of global auto production.

Still, it remains to be seen how many BMW loyalists can be persuaded to go electric. The i3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km per hour in seven seconds -- only 1.5 seconds more than a Porsche Cayman -- so has plenty of performance to satisfy core customers.

"It can't be a Z sports car every time," said Thorben Wilcke, a real estate manager gazing at a Z4 roadster at a BMW showroom in central Berlin.

Wilcke, 53, already plans to trade his 5-Series saloon for an i3 when he moves to London next spring. "The i3 simply hits the zeitgeist and looks like a fun vehicle to drive."

Positive Tests for Doping Are Hurting the ?Legitimacy? of the Track ...

Positive Tests for Doping Track and Field Sport Tyson Gay

Last week news broke that American Tyson Gay and Jamaican Asafa Powell tested positive for ?banned substances?. Articles like this from Philip Hersh in the Chicago Tribune declared that doping was ?killing track and field?. I thoroughly enjoy most of Hersh?s work that discusses Track and Field but disagree that positive tests for doping are hurting the ?legitimacy? of the sport. Although other writers echoed similar sentiments, I chose Hersh as an example since the running website Letsrun.com often links his articles on their front page.

Doping is only one of a myriad of issues facing the sport right now but that will be addressed later. As we are in the latter stages of the Tour de France, and the most well-renown cheat in the history of cycling comes from the United States, one has to ask whether doping has adversely affected the popularity of cycling. Judging by the maniacs running alongside the bikers and the huge fanfare along the roads, I would venture out and say that it has not hampered the sport significantly.

Look at baseball which ?suffered? from the steroid era. Is attendance at games down because people think that the players might be cheating? Doubtful. Until the past year or so I could never understand why people go to baseball games on Sunday afternoons when it is boiling hot outside to sit around for a few hours. The answer is deceivingly simple: to drink beer with friends. I?m sure I am about to infuriate baseball fans but it is honestly one of the more boring sports to sit down and watch unless you are at the game. I?ve even dragged myself to the Birmingham minor league baseball team?s games on Thursdays at the prospect of cheap beer. My observations during those games? Nobody is watching. They are too engrossed in chatting with friends to pay attention. I am not saying that this holds true for everyone in attendance at baseball games but merely that the steroid era did not affect why people continue to still love the sport. It brings an entertainment value and makes you want to spend your money to go.

Track, however, suffers from the double hit of the best athletes taking drugs and struggling to bring entertainment to the casual fan who may have never heard of Tyson Gay. Due to the marketing machine he is, almost everyone has heard of Usain Bolt. I?ve been involved in Track for over a decade now and most of my family have no idea who Tyson Gay is. That?s partially my fault for not educating them but it?s also that Track struggles mightily to bring attention to normal Americans. That it ever will is unlikely due to the competition with the other major sports. Even then, any sort of recognition must be better than the headline of ?Another American T/F athlete busted for doping?. If we cannot, then Track and Field will go the opposite way of the Tour and MLB and permanently lose its credibility.

Mental illness could make you successful, University of Bolton researcher claims

Mental illness could make you successful, University of Bolton researcher claims

MENTAL illness could aid success, according to research by a?University of Bolton professor.

Professor Jerome Carson, the university?s Professor of Psychology, has been exploring what he calls "the paradox between mental health issues and excellence".

He has investigated the possible mental health issues of some of history?s most intriguing figures ? and believes it could have helped them become the leaders they were.

Together with former history teacher, Elizabeth Wakely, Prof Carson has examined Abraham Lincoln, Florence Nightingale, Winston Churchill and Charles Darwin and any mental health issues they may have suffered.

Prof Carson said that each of these luminaries was brilliant in their own speciality ? be it in politics, science or medicine ? yet each was affected by issues like depression and anxiety.

He argues America?s most famous president, Abraham Lincoln, suffered from intense bouts of depression.

Outside of politics he had a challenging life, outliving three of his four children and historical evidence also shows his wife had mental health problems, probably schizophrenia.

Prof Carson said: ?His suffering was seen as an asset. ?It allowed him to be seen as a human being. This is something that definitely wouldn?t happen now. In today?s political landscape it would be seen as a weakness.?

Florence Nightingale?s place in history was secured with her heroic and groundbreaking work in the Crimean War.

But evidence suggests the UK?s most famous nurse also suffered with several mental health problems.

?Florence Nightingale was the most complex character of the people we investigated. People will be well aware of the Lady and the Lamp persona and her role in the Crimean War. However, there is a lot more to her story, ? said Prof Carson People who suffer from bipolar conditions experience fluctuating states of mood, enjoying feelings of extreme mania and euphoria, followed by a deep depression.

?She spent 30 years of her life housebound and six of those in her bed, ? said Prof Carson.

The UK?s Second World War Prime Minister Winston Churchill?s depression, which he called his ?black dog?, was said to affect his personality in that he was infamously stubborn.

Prof Carson said that during the Second World War these character traits were an asset.

Charles Darwin, author of the pioneering book on evolution, The Origin of Species, suffered from a chronic anxiety disorder.

Prof Carson said: ?His condition was so severe that he missed the launch of his magnum opus, The Origin of Species and was unable to take part in the Oxford debate.?

Professor Carson and Elizabeth Wakely, along with Sophie Davies and Sarah Morgan are co-editors of the book Mental Health Recovery Heroes Past and Present.

South Africa's Robin Peterson concedes 35 runs in an over

Thisara Perera took Robin Peterson for 35 runs in an over (6, wd, 6, 6, 6, 4, 6) - the second most expensive in ODI history.

Back in 2004, Brian Lara in one of those moods took 28 runs (4, 6, 6, 4, 4, 4) in a Test match over, the most expensive in Test history. The bowler - Robin Peterson!

After 3398 ODIs and 2091 Tests, Robin Peterson figures prominently in the lists of ignominy in both formats. Funny thing is, his ODI economy rate of 4.87 over 75 ODIs suggests he's usually reliable!

Why Apple Has Failed to Win Over China

Apple?s strong quarterly sales were somewhat overshadowed by falling revenues in Greater China. Apple has slipped to 5th place by retaining 9% of the $80 billion smartphone market in that country. In contrast, Samsung holds 19% of the market and continues its successful foray into the country. But how could this happen? Reuters has the details.

In the fight for market share, Samsung and Apple represent two completely different approaches, and it looks like the South Korean manufacturer?s scenario works better. But there is something we often forget when it comes to the battle for Chinese customers: Samsung began its experience in Greater China much earlier than Apple. It opened its first office in China back in 1985 in Beijing, while Apple opened its first store in 2008.

Samsung-vs-Apple-china-stores

Reuters points to several key factors that facilitate the Samsung advantage: a longstanding variety of models, retail presence and constant market adaptation.

We have already shed light on some of the tricks the South Korean company uses to market its brand. It markets five different models of the same Galaxy S4 model ? but there is much more to it than that: Samsung?s ever-present retail stores are stuffed with multiple models, while Apple has only eight stores in four cities and it launches only one model a year. To put that into numbers: Samsung smartphones outnumber iPhones at least four to one.

Furthermore, there is the issue of price. While Apple targets the high-end market, Samsung?s models have different specs and they are marketed to different price points.

What?s interesting is that Chinese customers are after feature-rich smartphones. This favours Samsung, since the South Korean OEM targets them with localized feature-tailored handsets.

?The Chinese just love features. They want their phone to have 50 different things that they?re never going to use,? said Michael Clendenin, managing director of technology consultancy RedTech Advisors. ?Apple just doesn?t play that game. Unfortunately, if you want to hit the mainstream market in China, and you want a lot of market share percentage points, you have to offer the Swiss army knife of cellphones.?

As the above example shows, Samsung appears to be more dynamic and it constantly adapts to the local market and its needs, while Apple?s Californian cool remains a niche market.

A major factor influencing Apple?s sales is that it only works with three carriers. For example in Guangzhou province it has 95 official distributors and resellers, while Samsung has 200 in the same area. And Samsung has a contract with all Chinese telecoms.

Samsung-vs-Apple-china-stores-2

What?s more interesting is that the Chinese government is aware of Apple, but this isn?t always a good thing. You might recall that the company has faced criticism over its one-year service warranty, which triggered an apology letter from Tim Cook. I don?t want to say that Apple is under scrutiny in China, but it has had its bad moments.

Samsung?s reach extends higher than just the CEOs of the top state-owned telecom companies. Top executives have met each of the last several Chinese leaders, most recently Xi Jinping, who spent time in April with vice chairman Jay Y. Lee, son of K.H. Lee, Samsung Electronics chairman.

?What surprised me most,? said Lee later, ?was that they (Chinese leadership) know very well about Samsung. They even have a group studying us.?

Finally, Apple has managed to put a dent in the $80 billion Chinese smartphone market, but Samsung?s strategy of targeting both high- and low-end markets worked better. Samsung?s strategy has been helped by the company?s earlier presence in the market. It remains to be seen whether Apple will change its strategy and launch a polycarbonate iPhone. This could boost its market presence in Greater China, since the average wage is roughly $640 per month, and many users looking to upgrade from feature phones to smartphones simply can?t afford an iPhone.

Giant Electromagnet Ends Its Month-Long Move

After more than a month of traveling over land and sea, a huge doughnut-shaped electromagnet has crossed the finish line of its 3,200-mile (5,000 kilometers) haul from New York to Illinois.

Since the end of June, the massive magnet had been moving at a creeping pace to get to its new home at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, or Fermilab, in Batavia, a suburb of Chicago. As the centerpiece of a future physics experiment called Muon g-2 (pronounced "gee minus two"), the magnet will be used to capture and store muons, rare subatomic particles that exist for just 2.2 millionths of a second. ?

From its original location, at Brookhaven National Lab on Long Island, the 50-foot-wide (15 meters) piece of machinery had to be trucked and loaded carefully onto a barge, which carried it down the Atlantic coast, around the tip of Florida, across the Gulf of Mexico, and into the mouth of the Mississippi River, pushed along by tugboat. [See Photos from the Magnet's Long Voyage]

Last weekend, the strange cargo reached a port in Lemont, Ill., along the Des Plaines River, where it was again met by a specially outfitted truck. After three slow, police-escorted nighttime drives, the magnet finally entered the gates of Fermilab in the wee hours of Friday morning (July 26). The lab will hold a public celebration Friday afternoon to greet the gargantuan particle-capturing ring.

The journey was slow and circuitous as the slightest tilt or twist could irreparably damage the complex wiring inside the 15-ton (13.6-tonne) magnet. The trip was estimated to have cost $3 million, but officials have said it would have cost 10 times more to build a new magnet at Fermilab.

Previous experiments at Brookhaven hinted that muons did not behave as predicted by the reigning theory of particle physics, the Standard Model. Scientists hope to get more precise data on these exotic particles using a powerful Fermilab accelerator that can generate a more intense and pure beam of muons.

The Muon g-2 experiment is scheduled to start in 2016 and will involve 26 institutions around the world.

Actress Amanda Bynes at a fashion show in New York City in 2009.

Amanda Bynes' spree of bizarre behavior in public continued on Monday night, creating more drama for the former actress.

Bynes, 27, was involved in a "disturbance" in a residential neighborhood in Thousand Oaks, north of Los Angeles, Capt. Don Aguilar of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. After investigating the incident, deputies determined that Bynes met the criteria for a 5150 welfare hold, or an involuntary psychiatric hold.

Sgt. Eric Buschow told The Hollywood Reporter that the fire department was called around 8:45 p.m. after Bynes sparked a fire in the driveway area of a single-family residence. He noted that this was "not a deliberate attempt to set a house on fire" and there was no damage to the home and added that Bynes is not related to the residents of the home in any way.

Bynes, who grew up in Thousand Oaks, owns a home in nearby Calabasas. She recently made a court appearance in New York City wearing a blue wig, big sunglasses, fake eyelashes, a tank top and sweat pants to face misdemeanor charges in an incident reported by a doorman who told police that Bynes was smoking marijuana in the lobby. Before officers arrived, Bynes had gone back to her 36th floor apartment, and when police came to her apartment, she reportedly tossed the water pipe out the window.

Bynes made no comment during the hearing but has previously denied the charges of marijuana possession, reckless endangerment and attempted tampering with evidence. In September, she'll return to court for another scheduled hearing on the matter.

Bynes has been in the headlines for months for her erratic public behavior, legal problems and her Twitter rants, which sometimes involve insulting other celebrities. Bynes gained early stardom at the age of 13 when she had her own comedy show on the Nickelodeon television network. She later starred the TV show "What I Like About You" and had a major role in the movie "What a Girl Wants" but has not appeared in a film since 2010's "Easy A."

As mandated by law, Bynes will remain in custody for treatment and evaluation for 72 hours.

(AP Photo/Jorge Saenz)

(AP) ? A wrong turn sent a humble Fiat carrying Pope Francis into the thick of a frenzied Rio crowd Monday, in his first minutes back in South America since becoming pontiff. It was a nightmare for security officials, but for the clearly delighted pope just another opportunity to connect.

Ecstatic throngs forced his motorcade to repeatedly come to a standstill, weeks after violent protests against the government paralyzed parts of Brazil. Francis' driver had turned into the wrong side of a boulevard at one point, missing lanes that had been cleared. Other parts of the pope's route to the city center weren't lined with fencing, giving the throngs more chances to get close, with uniformed police nowhere in sight to act as crowd control.

The three dozen visible Vatican and Brazilian plainclothes security officials struggled to keep the crowds at bay. Francis, however, not only looked calm but got even closer to the people. He rolled down his back-seat window, waved to the crowd and touched those who reached inside. He kissed a baby a woman handed to him.

"His secretary was afraid," papal spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said. "But the pope was happy."

The pope is here on a seven-day visit meant to fan the fervor of the faithful around the globe. That task has grown more challenging as Roman Catholics stray, even in strongholds of the religion such as Brazil, yet it seemed to come easily to Francis even on the drive from the airport to an official opening ceremony.

After finally making it past crowds and blocked traffic, Francis switched to an open-air vehicle as he toured around the main streets in downtown Rio through mobs of people who screamed wildly as he waved and smiled. He left his popemobile ? the bulletproof one ? in the Vatican garage so he could better connect with people during the church's World Youth Day.

The Vatican insisted they had no concern for the pope's safety as his vehicles eased through the masses, but Lombardi acknowledged that there might have been some "errors" that need correcting.

"This is something new, maybe also a lesson for the coming days," Lombardi said.

Many in the crowd looked stunned to see the pope, with some standing still and others sobbing loudly.

"I can't travel to Rome, but he came here to make my country better ... and to deepen our faith," Idaclea Rangel, a 73-year-old Catholic choked through her tears after the pope passed by.

As many as 1 million young people from around the world are expected in Rio for the Catholic youth fest, a seemingly tailor-made event for the Argentine-born pope, who has proven enormously popular in his four months on the job. But the fervor of the crowds that regularly greet Francis in St. Peter's Square was nothing compared with the raucous welcome in Rio.

Popes generally get a warm welcome in Latin America; even the more aloof Pope Benedict XVI received a hero's welcome when he visited Mexico and Cuba in 2012. John Paul II frequently received rock star treatment, and during one 1996 visit to Venezuela, his motorcade was similarly mobbed when he stopped to greet well-wishers after greeting prisoners.

Outside the Guanabara government palace where the pope was officially welcomed, Alicia Velazquez, a 55-year-old arts teacher from Buenos Aires, waited to catch a glimpse of the man she knew well when he was archbishop of her hometown.

"It was so amazing when he was selected, we just couldn't believe it. We cried and hugged one another," Velazquez said. "I personally want to see if he's still the same man as simple and humble whom we all knew. I have faith that he's remained the same."

Francis displayed that humility in greeting President Dilma Rousseff, saying he understood that to really know Brazilians, one must pass through their heart.

"So let me knock gently at this door," Francis said in Portuguese at the official welcome ceremony. "I have neither silver nor gold, but I bring with me the most precious thing given to me: Jesus Christ."

On the plane en route to Rio, he had lamented that an entire generation of young people risked not knowing what it's like to work thanks to an economic crisis that has seen youth unemployment skyrocket in many European countries while leaving the poor of the developing world behind.

"People get their dignity from work, they earn their bread," he told reporters aboard the plane. "Young people in this moment are in crisis."

Francis arrived at a tense time for Brazil, as the country reels from sometimes violent demonstrations that began last month as a protest against public transport price hikes and mushroomed into a wave of protests against government corruption, inefficiency and spending for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Those protests continued after Francis' arrival. Police and anti-government protesters clashed outside the government palace. About an hour after the pontiff concluded his short speech, police began cracking down on the protests, firing rubber bullets in an effort to disperse the crowd.

The government spent about $52 million for Francis' visit, but he does not appear to be a focus of protesters' rage.

"We've got nothing against the pope. Nobody here is against him," said Christopher Creindel, a 22-year-old art student and Rio native protesting outside the government palace. "This protest is against our politicians."

Lombardi confirmed that a homemade explosive device was found Sunday by Brazilian authorities in a public toilet near the basilica at Aparecida, a Marian shrine that Francis will visit Wednesday. Vatican security was informed of the device but wasn't concerned because it didn't appear to have been aimed at the pope, Lombardi said.

"There are no concerns for security. The concerns are that the enthusiasm is so great that it's difficult to respond to so much enthusiasm for the pope. But there is no fear and no concern," he told reporters.

Francis' weeklong schedule underscores his commitment to make his pontificate focus on the poor. He will walk through one of Rio's shantytowns, or favelas, and meet with juvenile offenders, an extension of his call for a more missionary church that goes to the peripheries to preach.

He will also pray at Aparecida, an indication of his strong Marian devotion that is shared in much of Latin America. And, in a rather incongruous matchup, he will preside over a procession re-enacting Christ's crucifixion on the beach at Copacabana, ground zero of Rio's Sin City.

Alex Augusto, a 22-year-old seminarian dressed in the bright green official T-shirt for pilgrims, said Monday that he and five friends made the journey from Brazil's Sao Paulo state to "show that contrary to popular belief, the church isn't only made up of older people, it's full of young people. We want to show the real image of the church."

Yet pilgrims like Augusto are the exception in Brazil and much of Latin America, a region with more faithful than any other in the world but where millions have left the church for rival Pentecostal evangelical churches or secularism.

A poll from the respected Datafolha group published Sunday in the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo said 57 percent of Brazilians age 16 and older call themselves Catholic, the lowest ever recorded. In 1980, when Pope John Paul II became the first pontiff to visit Brazil, 89 percent listed themselves as Catholics, according to that year's census.

Datafolha interviewed 3,758 people across Brazil on June 6-7 and said the poll had a margin error of 2 percentage points.

Moto X benchmarks and specs slip out, point to a fine mid-tier phone

Moto X benchmarks reportedly slip

We've already seen Motorola's rumored Moto X in press renders, photos, videos and even the hands of a Google executive; why not throw some benchmarks and specifications into the mix? Android Police is more than happy to add that grist to the rumor mill with a set of photos that reportedly show the AT&T Moto X ("Ghost") running AnTuTu and 3DMark tests. If accurate, the scores hint at a mid-range Android 4.2.2 phone whose 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro and 2GB of RAM produce good (though not great) results. The rest of the visible specs are equally middle-of-the-road -- we see a 720p screen, 16GB of built-in storage, NFC, a 10.5-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front shooter. The hardware alone may not tempt customers, then, but Motorola could be counting on customization and software tricks to lure more customers. We'll know the full story on August 1st.

Former Darksiders team at work on Ryse: Son of Rome, plus new "things"

The artist formerly known as Vigil has been assisting Crytek's Ryse: Son of Rome team following its life-saving acquisition, Crytek USA producer Mike Read has told Siliconera.

That's in addition to certain new "things", which may or may not include the mysterious Crawler project, revealed during former Vigil owner THQ's bankruptcy proceedings. The latter's ownership status is unknown, and we've yet to lay eyes on prototype footage or screenshots, but lead combat designer Ben Cureton paints a vivid picture.

"We did, in TWO months, what many companies haven't done in a year," he wrote in January. "The pride of knowing that no one was doing anything like us was so satisfying, it kept us coming to work and giving 100% every single day, even through the dark times."

As for the Darksiders IP, new owner Nordic Games is confident that the franchise has a bright future. "I'm sure we can find a solution for at least one of the IPs, or a few of the IPs, this year," CEO Lars Wingefors said of Nordic's various THQ acquisitions (which include Volition's Red Faction series) in April. "Potentially this summer. There will be a lot of discussions at E3, but it's hard to say. I'm very open minded and flexible. I trust a handshake. I just need to find the right people."

An obvious approach would be to sign up Crytek USA (which currently comprises 30 staff) to work on Darksiders 3. How about it, Nordic?
