LONG BEACH - A poll commissioned by Mayor Bob Foster's campaign committee shows him with strong leads over potential challengers if he were to run in the April mayoral race.

Foster was the choice of 40 percent of likely voters, while Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske drew 20 percent in the June 15-17 survey conducted by Goodwin Simon Research that was obtained by the Press-Telegram.

Businessman and former NFL player Damon Dunn and Long Beach City College Trustee Doug Otto drew 8 percent and 7 percent, respectively, and 26 percent were undecided. Another prospective candidate, nonprofit education founder Jana K. Shields, was not included in the sampling.

The poll's existence indicates that Foster is seriously considering seeking a third term as a write-in candidate.

Foster had said he would make a decision earlier this year, but has since said he could delay his choice until September.

Late last week, however, a source close to Foster said he is expected to make a decision by the end of this month. The campaign committee declined to comment on the poll.

More than two-thirds of voters surveyed, 67 percent, had a favorable opinion of Foster, while 17 percent had an unfavorable opinion.

As Long Beach prepares for a budget season with a surplus for the first time in a decade, 63 percent of those polled said Long Beach is heading in the right direction. Twenty-one percent

viewed Long Beach as off track.

The poll of 401 voters had a 5 percent margin of error.
