Maingear announces Nomad 17 gaming laptop, comes with custom paint job

Maingear certainly loves to turn out solidly specificated hardware, and today is no exception. Its latest offering? The Nomad 17. As the name suggests this is a 17-inch notebook for gamers on the go. (Nomad, get it?) The new addition will support third-gen Intel Core i7 chips (up to 3.8GHz) and a maximum 32GB of RAM, with a choice of hard drive configurations. It's not all about the under-the-hood grunt, though, with Maingear offering a choice of six colors for what it's calling "hand-painted premium automotive paint jobs." As for the other spec options? You can expect NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675M or 680M graphics, a 1,920 x 1080 display, combo Blue-ray optical drive, b / g / n wireless along with USB 2 / 3, DVI-I, HDMI and Fire Wire ports. So, this definitely sounds like a ride you can make your own. Assuming you're good with the $1,599 starting sticker price that is.

The RJC Wants to Give You An iPad 3

By Josh Nathan-Kazis

Casino billionaire and Romney super PAC donor Sheldon Adelson

Want a new iPad 3? Spend fifty hours phone banking for the Republican Jewish Coalition and the $599 model is yours.

Only have forty hours? That?s okay ? the RJC can still hook you up with the $499 version.

RJC volunteers in California, Washington, New York and Florida who rack up phone banking hours between now and the election are eligible for the prizes, according to RJC executive director Matt Brooks.

?It?s a token way of saying thank you for people who are giving up a lot of time,? Brooks told the Forward.

Volunteers who make calls for 30 hours will receive an older iPad model, and volunteers who work for 20 hours will get a $100 gift card.

Political groups don?t usually offer volunteers expensive incentives like iPads, according to Michael Tobman, a New York-based political consultant who?s run volunteer phone banks and paid phone banks. ?iPads seem a bit excessive, but if the money?s there and a group wants to do that, I guess the new normal is being defined upward,? Tobman said. ?Generally it?s pizza, thanks, and credit for having done it.?

Phone banks organized by the National Jewish Democratic Council have not offered similar incentives, according to that group?s president and CEO David Harris.

The expensive gifts are another sign of the economic heft of the Republican group, which released a lengthy video this week featuring Israelis criticizing President Obama?s record on Israel.

Casino billionaire and Romney super PAC donor Sheldon Adelson is a major supporter of the RJC.

Johnny Depp Surprises Oklahoma With Native American Parade Appearance!

johnny depp comanche indian fair

Look at him! He's just so happy to be there!

Being an amazing person once again, Johnny Depp decided to spend time with his fellow members of the Comanche Indian tribe during the Comanche Nation Fair on Saturday.

As an honorary member, Johnny waved and smiled at the Oklahoma residents who lined the streets to watch the parade.

But here's the really cool part ? his appearance wasn't publicized? at all.

It was all a HUGE surprise!! Ahhh!! Those lucky, lucky Oklahoma people!!

As we've discussed before, Johnny became an honorary member back in the Spring for his work with Lone Ranger.

With all the time he spends on that film, it's amazing he can actually donate what's leftover to things like this!!

TENNderCare Covers Tots, Kids, and Teens in Tennessee ...

by Jen Thorpe | More from this Blogger

handprints Every state has its own Medicaid program. Some portion of that program is typically designed to cover newborns, children, and teenagers. In Tennessee, this program is called TENNderCare. It covers tots, kids, teenagers, and those under 21 years of age.

Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It provides health insurance coverage for individuals and families who are low-income and who cannot afford to buy a health plan from a private insurance company. Funding for Medicaid comes from both the federal government and also from the government of an individual state.

In Tennessee, the Medicaid program is called TennCare. It is administered by the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Some states call the part of Medicaid that covers children CHIP. In Tennessee, the program is called TENNderCare. It covers children who come from low-income families from birth through age 21. It covers children who are already covered by TennCare (the state's primary Medicaid program).

TENNderCare provides checkups and health care services to make sure that babies, children, teens, and young adults receive the health care that they need. Dental coverage is included through TennDent.

The state of Tennessee uses this helpful phrase: "Check in, Check up, Check back". Checkups are provide for free. This includes checkups for vision, hearing, dental, and mental health. You can find resources that explain more about what age a child should have certain checkups done through the TENNderCare website.

Not every state covers mental health for kids, but Tennessee does. It includes Behavioral Health Services. TENNderCare can help if your child is having trouble with Behavioral Problems (including anger management), ADD/ADHD, Alcohol or drug abuse, eating disorders, or mental health issues (including major depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar, etc.).

TennCare also will covers services that are "medically necessary". This can include medical care, dental services, prescriptions, transportation to health care providers, hospital services, x-rays, physical therapy, speech therapy, or occupational therapy, and mental health services.

Children under the age of 21 who are eligible for TENNderCare will be automatically assigned to a Health Plan. The one they are assigned to is determined by the area of Tennessee that the child lives in. There is one plan for dental care through TENNderCare, and it is called TennDent. This is the same no matter where in Tennessee an eligible child happens to live.

To apply for TennCare, or other Medicaid programs, a person can visit their local Department of Human Services. Or, they can call to have an application sent to them. The application can be mailed out after it is completed. It is also possible to apply online.

Estate Planning For Sdn Bhd Shareholders ? SharesInv.com

By Lee Khee Chuan

Wisdom doesn?t automatically come with old age. Nothing does ? except wrinkles. It?s true, some wines improve with age. But only if the grapes were good in the first place.

-Abigail Van Buren

Tom and Harry (not their real names) own a successful chain of retail shops, as equal shareholders of a Sendirian Berhad (Sdn. Bhd.) company in a city of 600,000 residents.

They recently rejected an offer to sell their company for RM2,000,000 believing that the business was worth much more. Besides, they wanted to expand their business. Among the many keys to their success is their ability to work long hours with each other and to complement each other?s strengths.

Their estate planner did ask what would happen if either of them were not around or became disabled and could not contribute to the business.

Tom, a widower, was especially threatened by the thought. Harry, who cares for his semi-invalid mother, recognised the threat of disability. They asked what they should do. The adviser recommended a funded business continuation agreement. This is an arrangement that provides for the transfer of the share ownership to a party who will continue to operate the business. They thought about it briefly, but delayed acting on the idea when sales activity exploded in anticipation of the year-end season. Tom died of a heart attack just before the holidays ended.

Tom had a simple will drawn up after his wife?s death. Unfortunately, it did not expressively address his business shareholding. He left all his assets in a testamentary trust for his minor children. His brother serving as an executor and trustee is concerned because of the lack of cash in the trust.

In the last few years, Tom had been buying up land from the handsome income earned from his business as he always told his friends land is the best investment. Beside his shareholdings in the Sdn Bhd, he also owns a detached house, but not much in the way of bank savings, because he always thought that by keeping too much cash in the bank, the money is not working hard enough for him.

To raise cash for Tom?s testamentary trust, the trustee planned to liquidate the Sdn Bhd, believing the sale of the shares to be a quicker and easier approach than trying to sell or continue the business. Harry is distraught because he prefers to continue the profitable business. Clearly the two shareholders, the trustee (holding on trust for Tom?s minor children) and Harry, have conflicting objectives.

What could Tom and Harry have done to prevent this unfortunate entanglement?

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS
1. Realistically assess the implications of your withdrawal from the business, if you are the primary, or only, share?holder, do you have the quality of management in place to enable you to leave the Sdn Bhd without having to sell your shareholdings?

It is just simplistic thinking to assume that the potential for the unlimited life of the Sdn Bhd will solve all business continuation problems.

Business structure alone will not guarantee suc?cess. You must create the environment that will give the new owners the optimal chance to succeed, espe?cially if your future income depends on it.

2. Hire and train successor-owners long before your planned departure. If your business is not the kind that can be easily sold for cash in the open market (and most can?t), create your own market by setting up the key people in-house to be the purchasers. Don?t assume you can bring in someone talented to take your place a few months before you depart. It takes time to find, recruit, and develop successor-managers who can become successor-owners.

3. Enter into a buy-sell arrangement. A written agreement is critical. By contracting with the ultimate purchaser, you create a guaranteed mar?ket for your business in the event of your death or dis?ability.

You also improve the likelihood of a market for your share when you voluntarily retire. An agreement can avoid the problem of surviving shareholders end?ing up in business with a surviving spouse or the chil?dren?s trustee.

To be conscious that you are ignorant is a great step to knowledge.

Status of Smoking in Islam | |ch|baN's Blog

o much fun, then why do you not teach your kids how to use it ?

SMOKING
Smoking has become familiar in our youths ? be it male or female. Our young generations feel proud in smoking and thinks it adds another feather to their style.?

But smoking has various side-effects. It not only terminates your body but it also affects your social life too. It is like throwing yourself into destruction and God Almighty prohibits indulging in these kinds of activities in the Glorious Quran, which says:?And do not throw yourself unto destruction? [Surah Baqarah (2):195.]

There are various diseases caused by smoking like: Emphysema, Bronchitis, Chronic, instructive Pulmonary,Coronary artery, Peripheral artery disease, Colo rectal cancer,Liver cancer,Prostate cancer, Erectile dysfunction in men, Stomach cancer, Bladder and kidney cancer, Abdominal aortic aneurysm, Acute myelitis leukemia, Cataracts, Cervical cancer, Kidney cancer, Pancreatic cancer, Periodontists, Pneumonia, Cancers of the larynx and mouth, Lung cancer. Majority of the diseases are irreversible ? once affected never comes to the normal condition.

Smoking also contributes to conditions, such as: Hip fractures due to reduced bone density, Complications from diabetes as a result of peripheral vascular disease, higher incidence of post-surgical wound infections, reproductive complications, such as problems conceiving.

Smoking also affects your surroundings ??
the people around you and the environment. Even there are chances of the diseases for passive smokers (who inhale smoke from the smoker). Some people have developed cancer related to smoking who have never smoked before. These cases can possibly have a relationship to environmental causes and heredity. Because of you smoking others are also suffering. So quitting smoking gives healthy life to your coming generation. At least by thinking of others you should quit smoking. It even hurts the family members because of the diseases and the consequences you face of smoking. Also it Blackens your lips , gums your finger tips, lips, stomach. Sexual power gets suppress. Reduces defense of your body.

Islam does not give permission to Harm Others:

In Islam one cannot Harm your Neighbor and other people, when we expel smoke out it causes more harm to others. Passive smoking is more danger than active smoking. Hence it is also ban to smoke on public places. As per the research Wife of the Chain Smokers have more chances of Lung Cancer.

The smoker doesn?t even realize the smell of smoking around him. There will be smell of smoking around him, on his hair, clothes, bed on which he sleep, his room and other things which he usually use. And the smell last longer even after quitting.?

Prevention is better than cure:

The best way to avoid developing these conditions and diseases is to stop smoking. You can enjoy immediate benefits by stopping smoking right now. You can see various developments in your body and hence you will be fit ? physical and mental too. Your body begins to go through changes the moment you smoke your last cigarette like: reduction in heart rate, blood pressure, as well as reduced risk of cancer, heart attack, and stroke. These changes continue as long as you don't smoke.?

Other benefits include: increased sense of smell and taste, wounds heal faster than before, eradication of smoking-smell around you, physical and mental fitness, etc.

Smoking is nothing but ?Burning of Money? and wastage of money is not allowed in Islam.

Allah says in Glorious Quraan:?And do not throw yourself unto destruction? [Surah Baqarah (2):195.]
On this verse of the Glorious Quraan there are more than 400 Fatawas including the Scholars of Saudi Arabia that Smoking and All types of Tobacco whether its a Bidi, Hukka etc. is Haraam its Prohibited in Islam.

Also our Beloved Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: A man cannot move his legs on the day of Judgement until he clear 5 Questions out of which is, from where you earn the money ( legally or illegally) and where you have spend the Money.
On the day of Judgment we cannot say to our Creator Allah that I smoke out of your given money.

Also smoking is against the purpose of fasting including Taqwaa.
Allah says:?O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (pious)?
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:183]

If a person is Abstain from Tobacco and other Bad Things from Suhoor till Iftaar it will be very easy for him to leave them.

Smoking breaks the fast, and it cannot be used as an excuse not to fast. How can a sin be taken as an excuse?!

Brothers this is the best time to change our self and to change the world. We are running towards the death, we dont know when we will Die. Lets repent to our Lord and ask him for forgiveness and lets make a Niyat (Intention) that we will leave smoking and other bad things and we will speak against them as it?s against the commandment of our Creator ALLAH.

Allah says:?You are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right,?
forbidding what is wrong and believing in Allah.

Sharing the plug: the evolving etiquette of charging stations

Gordon-Bloomfield explores the brave new world of electric car charging station etiquette.

By Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield,?Guest blogger / September 26, 2012

An electric vehicle is plugged into a charging station at the Automechanika trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany in this September 2012 file photo. With adoption of plug-in cars extending beyond enthusiastic, well-versed early-adopters, Gordon-Bloomfield wonders if charging station abuse will become a more common sight.

With recharging of a fully empty car like a 2012 Nissan Leaf taking up to 8 hours at a public level 2 charging station however, how should access to charging points be prioritized?

Should all-electric?cars, for example, get preferential treatment over plug-in?hybrids?like the 2013 Chevrolet Volt??

It?s a topic?we?ve covered before, but thanks to a recent post by?The New York Times?covering a?study by the University of California, Davis on charging etiquette, we?ve decided to revisit the subject.?

At present, most plug-in car owners follow some simple, unwritten rules about charging etiquette, leaving messages on their car?s windshield inviting other plug-in car owners to usurp them at the charging station if they need an urgent charge OR their own car is sufficiently charged already, or perhaps only charging if they really need to.

This share and share alike mentality has served the electric car community pretty well for years, only to be challenged by the?occasional selfish plug-in driver, and in California,?Assembly Bill 475.

In most situations, it even works with a mix of plug-in?hybrid?and all-electric car owners.?

After all, with most electric-only cars offering ranges well beyond the usual distance travelled, all-electric car drivers are less likely to want to plug-in at a public charging station than those with limited-all-electric range plug-in hybrids like the 2012 Chevrolet Volt and 2012 Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid.

It?s worth noting too, that for most plug-in car drivers, finding another plug-in car monopolizing charging station time isn?t as common as finding aninternal combustion engined car blocking access to the charging station.?

With adoption of plug-in cars extending beyond enthusiastic, well-versed early-adopters, however, will charging station abuse become a more common sight??

Does there need to be a formal code of use set out for public charging stations to ensure electric car owners aren?t left with a case of?charging station rage??

Should electric car charging, for example, be given on a first-come, first-served basis??

Should plug-in hybrid owners with limited all-electric range but gasoline backup be prohibited from using public charging stations??

Or, to put a plug-in twist on George Orwell's classic Animal Farm; are all plug-in cars equal, or are some more equal than others??

How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a Hypochondriac [Video]

How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a HypochondriacGetting sick seems a lot more stressful now that we have the internet. You can research your symptoms, but inevitably you'll fall down a rabbit hole of illnesses that are so unlikely, every search will turn up a life-threatening disease. It is possible to get reliable, useful information, vet it properly, and even get an expert opinion, all online. Here's how.

Before we begin, a disclaimer: We're not doctors. We spoke to several for this story, but don't think you'll be able to walk away from this post able to diagnose your own symptoms. Our goal is to help you find reliable sources to turn to when you have minor aches and injuries, and give you an idea of what's up if you can't get an appointment right away. Keep in mind though, if diagnosis were easy, doctors wouldn't have to train so long to learn how to do it. If you have a serious condition or don't know what's going on, always consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Beware Dr. Google: Most Web Sites are Terrible at Diagnosis

How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a Hypochondriac We all know what it's like: you have an ache you're not familiar with, or a bruise suddenly appears and you have no idea where it came from. You fire up Google and type in the symptom, as specific as you can make it, and you're instantly overwhelmed by the dozens of possibilities, keywords, illnesses, and other scary terms. Unfortunately, no site can diagnose an illness based on symptoms that you type into a search box. Sure, you probably know if your stomachache just happened to set in a few hours after visiting the oyster bar, but keep in mind that a heart attack can have symptoms very similar to a bout of bad indigestion, and it can be difficult even for trained and experienced professionals to tell the difference without equipment or specific tests.

Every doctor I spoke to for this story warned against using Google for diagnoses, and noted that the world of medical information on the internet will just make you crazy with wonder if you search blindly. No one wants to sit in the dark at their computer at 2am wondering if the ache in your leg is a pulled muscle or a pulmonary embolism when one site says to rub some athletic cream on it and go to sleep while another says you need to go to the ER immediately. So what do you do instead?

Search Smart, and Use Interactive Doctor/Patient Services That Really Help

How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a Hypochondriac Scatter-shot symptom searches are almost always a bad idea, but there are some services and sites that are better than others. In most cases though, a cool head is much more valuable than a page full of scary search results. When you're struggling with symptoms, here are some important things to remember:

  • How confident are you that this is minor/major? There's no foolproof way to tell a minor issue from a major one, but things like pain or discomfort level can help. Try to stay calm, especially if the symptoms are unfamiliar, and think things through. Is it getting better or worse? Have you experienced this before, and how does this time compare? If you think the issue is major or don't know what you're dealing with, seek professional help. If the issue is minor, remember that as you research, so you don't get carried away.
  • Search with Occam's Razor in mind. Several of the doctors I spoke to mentioned that some patients wind up panicking because they dug up search results that aligned with their symptoms, but were so unlikely that they're almost never correct. This is one of the biggest issues with searching by symptom on the web: someone with a bad cold may come away thinking they've come down with dengue flu just because the symptoms may be similar. Remember, common conditions are the most likely ones (eg, a sprained ankle not a broken one, or a headache not an aneurysm.) Still, leave diagnosis to the pros: see a doctor so they can look you over and run tests if necessary?just be open to the fact that whatever you found online may not be the issue at hand.
  • How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a HypochondriacLearn to tell good medical sources from questionable ones. This point comes up frequently in the Quora thread we mentioned earlier, but it's critical. Healthfinder.gov, The Mayo Clinic, Medpedia; they're all great sites, but those sites are good because their articles and other content written by, vetted, and reviewed by actual medical professionals before they're published. When you're reading about the symptoms you're experiencing, make sure the information was written or at least reviewed by a doctor, and you're not reading the comments of an otherwise informative article or some user forum where everyone's a self-proclaimed doctor.

Also, make sure the doctors you're reading are experienced in the areas you're researching?a nutritionist can tell you how to eat well, but they can't tell you if your twisted ankle needs heat or cool to get better. Stick to established, trusted sites with authoritative voices, and when in doubt, print out what you're reading and ask your own doctor for a final say. Remember, nothing you read on the internet is a substitute for real, in-person analysis by a physician. It can be informative and useful as a way to talk to your doctor, but never the final word.

  • Use a service run by doctors that connects you with doctors. A number of new services and apps have appeared recently to combat this issue. One of the leading services is HealthTap, a service we've mentioned before that even has mobile apps to connect you with doctors on the go. One of the doctors I spoke to uses HealthTap himself to connect with people looking for help and offer guidance based on the information they provide?and of course to suggest they see a professional when necessary. The app has a database of questions asked by patients and answered by doctors who have signed up to help, and if you find a doctor you like, you can follow them to see more questions they answer, or communicate with them directly. The app even helps you find a doctor in your area and make an appointment.

HealthTap really shines when you have symptoms you want to know about though. Before you ask Dr. Google, the apps "virtual private consultations" allow you to pose your question to a live, on-call doctor, ready to offer their best opinion based on the symptoms, photos, video, or other information you provide. They still cost money ($10 per conversation), but it's still cheaper than many co-pays, and gets a real professional opinion in a short period of time. If you're experiencing something unfamiliar and don't want to go to the ER, or between health insurance providers, it's a useful way to talk to a doctor about what you're going through. HealthTap isn't the only service that puts real doctors on your computer screen or on your smartphone, but it's the best we've seen.

  • How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a HypochondriacCall an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) instead. Instead of taking to the internet with your symptoms, check your health insurance plan (if you have insurance, that is) and see if an EAP is available to you. Many EAPs have 24-hour hotlines you can call with both physical and mental health issues in case you're on the fence about whether you should go back to bed or head to the ER. Usually it's an on-call nurse that'll answer, or an operator who'll hand you off to a doctor or nurse, but it's better than symptom searching. Like HealthTap and similar services, an EAP puts you in touch with a live person who can help. Keep in mind though, all of these services say up front that if your condition is urgent or life-threatening, call 911 or get professional help immediately, don't delay. Photo by Kelvin_Kevin Gan.

Several years ago I fell for the marketing lingo in a commercial for an allergy pill I was interested in. I went to the doctor and explained that I had seasonal allergies, and would love something to help alleviate the symptoms. They wrote me a prescription, but it wasn't for the drug I was thinking about. I asked about that specific drug, parroting their marketing line and asking "are you sure I don't need something for indoor allergies and outdoor allergies?"

My doctor tilted her head and said "You watch too much television," before explaining that allergies are caused by a histamine reaction, and that the source of that reaction?whether it's "indoor" (like pet dander) or "outdoor" (like pollen or mold spores)?is the same, and can be treated with the same class of medications. I felt like an idiot?even more so looking back on it with what I know now?but let my embarrassment be a lesson: you don't want to be an "internet patient," so caught up in marketing language and far-fetched diagnoses that you can't tell a sniffle from internal bleeding, or worse, won't listen to the doctor when they explain it.

After the Diagnosis: Do Your Homework and Ask Questions

How to Get Reliable Medical Information on the Internet Without Turning Into a Hypochondriac With luck, your searches will turn up useful data that you can apply immediately, as opposed to vague diagnoses that leave you rattled and afraid. If the issue is minor and you can treat it at home, great?if you see a professional, let them know what you turned up in your searches, and ask for their opinion. Once you have a real diagnosis, you can Google a bit more freely. Photo by wavebreakmedia (Shutterstock).

Many of the sites we've mentioned, like Healthfinder.gov and Medpedia are great for looking up conditions and prescriptions after you've been to the doctor. For example, if your doctor says you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) because you've been waking up with heartburn every other night for the past three weeks, you can read all about it, what you can do to adjust to it, and more. Before the diagnosis though, searching for those symptoms would have led you everywhere from the right diagnosis to some rare form of stomach cancer. Similarly, if the doctor prescribes medication, you can read all about it and its side effects as well.

The web's wealth of medical information is really only useful to individuals with health conditions after you've talked to a doctor, but any doctor will tell you that an educated and engaged patient is a good one. Don't hesitate to do your homework, but go in to conversations with your doctor with an open mind. If you're looking for medical information before seeing a doctor, make sure you take what you find with a grain of salt, and if you're really concerned, make an appointment, visit the ER, or use a service that connects you with a doctor right away.

Avalanche survivors in Nepal tell of predawn confusion and terror

Climbers on Mount Manaslu in Nepal were caught unawares at 4 a.m. in the morning when an avalanche hit, killing at least nine. Six climbers are still missing.?

An unidentified rescuer speaks to an unidentified survivor in the debris field of an avalanche on Mount Manaslu in northern Nepal Sunday. Rescue helicopters flew over the high slopes of the northern Nepal peak again Monday to search for climbers lost in an avalanche that killed at least nine mountaineers and injured others.

Italian climber Silvio Mondinelli said he and a fellow mountaineer were asleep when they heard a violent sound and felt their tent start to slide.

"It was only a few seconds and we did not know what happened, but we had slid more than 650 feet," Mondinelli told The Associated Press on Monday. "All we wanted was for it to stop."

The avalanche hit at about 4 a.m. Sunday while more than two dozen climbers were sleeping in tents at Camp 3 on Mount Manaslu in northern Nepal.

At least nine climbers were killed and six are believed still missing. Many of the 10 survivors were injured and were flown to hospitals by rescue helicopters.

Helicopters flew over the slopes on Monday to search for the missing mountaineers as climbers and guides searched on foot. Rescuers brought down eight bodies ? four French, one each from Germany, Italy and Spain and a Nepali guide ? and were trying to retrieve the ninth from the 22,960-foot area where the avalanche struck, police Chief Basanta Bahadur Kuwar said.

Three French climbers and two Germans were transported to hospitals in Katmandu on Sunday. Two Italians were flown there on Monday ? Mondinelli, who has climbed the world's 14 highest peaks, and fellow mountaineer Christian Gobbi.

Mondinelli said a third Italian climber and their Sherpa guide were sleeping in another tent and both were buried by the avalanche and died.

Gobbi said they could not see at first when they looked out of their torn tent because it was pitch dark and they had no light.

"We found someone's boots and put them on," he said.

When the sun rose an hour later, they saw parts of tents scattered across the snow, along with people who had been killed or injured.

They said they were able to assist the injured with the help of Sherpa guides who came up from lower mountain camps. Those who could walk made their way down to the base camp while those who were injured were picked up by helicopters.

At least three of the victims were from the French Alps town of Chamonix, a hub for climbers on Mont Blanc and nearby peaks. An avalanche on a route to the summit of Mont Blanc in July killed nine experienced climbers.

Two French climbers were still unaccounted for as of Monday afternoon, the French Foreign Ministry said. The rescue effort was called off "at least for today, probably definitively," Christian Trommsdorff, president of the French Mountain Guides Syndicate, said on BFM television.

A total of 231 climbers and guides were on the mountain, but not all were at the higher camps hit by the avalanche.

Nepal Mountaineering Department chief Balkrishan Ghimire identified the eight recovered bodies as Fabrice Priez, Philippe Lucien Bos, Catherine Marie Andree Richard and Ludovic Paul Nicolas Challeat of France; German Christian Mittermeyer; Italian Alberto Magliano; Spaniard Marti Roirg Gasull; and Nepali Dawa Dorji.

Sunday's avalanche came at the start of Nepal's autumn climbing season, when the end of the monsoon rains makes weather in the high Himalayas unpredictable. Spring is a more popular mountaineering season, when hundreds of climbers crowd the peaks.

Mount Manaslu, which is 8,156 meters (26,760 feet) high, has attracted more climbers recently because it is considered one of the easier peaks to climb among the world's tallest mountains.

Nepal has eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world. Climbers have said in recent years that conditions on the mountains have deteriorated and risks of accidents have increased, with some blaming global warming.

Avalanches are not very frequent on Mount Manaslu, but in 1972 one struck a team of climbers and killed six Koreans and 10 Nepalese guides.

Ang Tshering of the Asian Trekking agency in Katmandu, who has equipped hundreds of expeditions, said low snow levels and the increased number of climbers on Manaslu have made climbing conditions difficult.

"It used to be a low-risk mountain in the past but now that has all changed," Tshering said, adding that conditions have become more unpredictable.

Scientist Claims New Fiber Could Cut Risk of Crohn's Disease

A Purdue University scientist trying to solve a general digestive problem ended up creating a new type of fiber. He believes its use might improve overall digestive health and cut the risk of developing Crohn's disease, colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and diverticulosis. As a Crohn's patient, I find this discovery intriguing but perhaps wishful thinking.

Researchers maintain that the body digests the custom fiber more slowly than it does other types of fiber, according to Medical News Today. Its developer, Purdue food scientist Bruce Hamaker, says the slower digestion of the patent-pending fiber could reduce digestive intolerance.

Hamaker initially focused on investigating dietary fiber intolerance. He indicates that it's primarily the byproduct of rapid fermentation produced when bacteria pull energy out of fiber. It affects most people to varying degrees.

One product of the fermentation process is butyrate. It has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body and feeds cells in the lining of the large intestine. The new fiber manufactures large amounts of butyrate as it travels through the digestive tract.

A common site of colon cancer, diverticulitis, and ulcerative colitis is the descending colon. As the new fiber moves through the gut, it passes through this area. The fiber's design allows scientists to target a therapeutic effect to specific areas.

This fiber has been tested in two clinical trials with human subjects at Chicago's Rush University Medical Center. The trials concluded that people tolerate Hamaker's designer fiber without any side effects and better than they tolerate psyllium, a substance often used in high-fiber foods.

Crohn's, an incurable inflammatory bowel disease that can develop in any part of the digestive tract from mouth to anus, affects approximately 700,000 Americans, according to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. While its exact cause remains unknown, researchers believe it's the end product of an abnormal immune reaction. Many patients have close relatives with the disease or its cousin, ulcerative colitis. Environmental factors might also be a culprit.

The immune reaction causes the body to attack substances normally harmless or even benign, says the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse. The result is inflammation.

Since Crohn's disease occurs in various parts of the digestive tract, the fiber's benefit to patients with the disorder apparently is its overall anti-inflammatory effect. The disease waxes and wanes. During flare-ups and after several Crohn's surgeries, there are times when I must avoid fiber. One interesting question about the new product is how it might help patients in similar circumstances as far as preventing additional flare-ups.

The Purdue Office of Technology Commercialization has exclusively licensed the fiber to Nutrabiotix LLC, which is a Purdue Research Park-based firm. If claims that the discovery could cut the risk of Crohn's disease and other digestive illnesses are sound, the product might eventually be available in various consumer markets.

Schaumburg IL - Real Estate Consumer Info

Did you know that in Schaumburg IL we have our own little version of Stonehenge?

Yes, that's right.??Schaumburg is home to works of art from around the world at the Chicago Athenaeum Museum right on our doorstep. Peacefully wooded and shaded pathway to view the gathered arts at your leisure. ?Bet you didn't know it was there!

Sculpture Park is located on the grounds of the Prairie Center for the Arts (just south-east along the pathway) offering 15 sculptures from international artists bringing the world to our little corner.

Three sculptures are my favorites. ?One looks like our own version of Stonehenge complete with blue sculpture park, schaumburg illinois, lyn sims, stones! ?It's called 'Vinland' done in 1999 by?Jarle Rosseland of Oslo, Norway.

?

'Vineland' commemorates the 1,000-year anniversary of the Viking explorer, Leif Eiriksson and his discovery of the Americas in the year 1001 AD. Fifteen giant stones in varying heights, from 6 to 15 feet, are arranged in the outline of a Viking ship with cryptic signs and the position of the stars and planets in the years 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 AD highlighted in gold leaf.

?

?

This sculpture reminds me of the Moai on Easter Island. ?It's called 'Skulaskeid' by Pall Gudmundsson from Iceland in 2000.

?

The eight-ton gigantic 6-foot head resembles an ancient face from Norse mythology. Quarried at the artist's studio at Husafell valley in Western Iceland, the name of the sculpture comes from an old legend of an outlaw, Skuli, who escaped his enemies riding the good horse "Sorli" over the rough trail of Kaldidalur, from Pingvellir to Husafell, where the horse died from exhaustion. The Icelandic poet, Grimur Thomsen (1820-1896) wrote about this epic tale from Viking times.

?

?

?

?

?

Another favorite of mine is 'Thought-Rise in Vacuum' by Hans-Christian Berg of Finland and done in 2001. ?It's a giant rolling baseball made out of 'paper clips!' ?I think it's wild!

?

?

The sculpture is composed of stainless steel and a metallic sphere, welded together in a cloud-like pattern with the perspective view of the larger numbers on the outside and the smaller numbers on the inside. The work welds art and science together. I think it's pretty cool!

?

?

?

My absolute favorite that I wanted to include in this post is not Ecce hora, sculpture park, schaumburg illinois, actually in the?Athenaeum Park itself but in front of the municipal building near the swan pond and bridge. ?It's called 'Ecce Hora' or?'Behold the Hour' by Christine Rojek.

The concept of the piece is based on making a decision says Rojek. ?She got attached to the idea of 'now or never' and the passage of time and?every day counts for this unique sundial piece.

Sculpture Parks in our area of IL

The sculpture 'Ecce Hora' has been featured in the Daily Herald publication:

Belichick wanted explanation of last-play FG

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? All Bill Belichick wanted was an explanation. He'll probably end up with a fine.

Wrapped up in an intense game with fellow AFC power Baltimore, the coach of the New England Patriots grabbed the arm of a replacement official after the Ravens won 31-30 on a last-play field goal Sunday night.

Belichick had an angry look, but didn't pursue him.

He was much calmer on Monday.

"When the game was over I went out and I was really looking for an explanation from the officials as to whether the play was under review," he said. "I did try to get the official's attention as he was coming off the field to ask that, but I really wasn't able to do that."

The usually laconic Belichick discussed at length the incident that followed Justin Tucker's 27-yard field goal, which capped Baltimore's comeback from a 30-21 deficit in the fourth quarter and dropped the Patriots (1-2) to their first sub-.500 record in nine years.

The kick appeared to go just inside the top of the right upright or slightly above it.

Belichick said a field-goal kick is not reviewable if it goes above the top of an upright, but is reviewable if it goes below the top and to either side of it.

"I saw our players waving that it was no good and I saw the officials giving the signal that it was good," he said. "I just wasn't sure from where I was standing whether the ball, when it went over the crossbar, was above the upright or in between or not in between the uprights.

"So I didn't know whether or not that play was going to be under review or whether it wasn't."

His contact with the official was very brief, but the NFL is taking a hard line against coaches while it has locked out regular officials in a labor dispute.

On Monday, it fined Denver Broncos coach John Fox $30,000 and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for arguing with replacement officials a week ago. NFL executive vice president of football operations Ray Anderson said he is reviewing the conduct of Belichick and the Ravens' John Harbaugh.

In his postgame news conference Belichick said he didn't expect to get fined. On Monday, he didn't mention the possibility of a fine or having touched the official.

"I've coached in this league a long time and never been penalized, never had any incidents with officials or anything like that," he said. "I have never meant any disrespect or in any way tried to abuse or be disrespectful to the officials and the job that they do. I was just trying to get an explanation for, obviously, an important call.

"That's the No. 1 thing between coaches and officials. It's always at the forefront. It's just communication of what's going on, what's happening."

Back in 2000, Belichick's first season as New England's coach, his communication with referee Johnny Grier resulted in the Patriots and Miami Dolphins returning to the field for the final play after about 35 minutes in the locker rooms.

Drew Bledsoe had just been called for a fumble and an illegal forward pass as time ran out and the teams left the field. Belichick said Monday that as he was walking off the field he told Grier the play appeared to be an incompletion and the Patriots should have another play. But Grier said, "No. That's the ruling. The game is over," Belichick recalled.

"We go back into the locker room (and) 10 minutes or so later, Johnny comes back and says they're reviewing the play, we may have to go back out and finish the game," he said. "About five minutes after that, when the players got dressed, we came back out for a final play in that game.

"I've been through a situation in the final play of the game where it's over, but it's not over, that type of thing. That was really the situation last night. So, I was trying to get the official's attention to get an explanation on it and in no way was I trying to do anything other than that."

There were questionable penalty calls throughout the game.

"I'm trying to focus on coaching our football team," Belichick said when asked about his frustration with replacement officials. "We need to do a better job of controlling the things that we need to control."

There were 14 penalties against the Ravens and 10 against the Patriots.

"We've all got to understand that, hey, they're making those calls on both sides of the ball. There's some good and bad calls on the Ravens (Sunday) night. There were some good and bad ones on us," Patriots wide receiver Deion Branch said Monday on WEEI radio. "As players, we need to remove ourselves from what the refs are doing and just go out and play our game."

Last season's AFC champions haven't been doing that up to their usual standards, having lost 20-18 to Arizona before Sunday's setback.

The Patriots led 30-21 with 10:50 left, then punted. The Ravens scored with 4:01 remaining, making it 30-28, but Tom Brady and the offense couldn't use up the entire clock. Another punt gave Baltimore the ball with 1:58 remaining.

Then New England's defense struggled, capped by Devin McCourty's pass interference that gave Baltimore the ball at the Patriots 7-yard line. Two plays later, Tucker made his winning kick.

"We just don't play well when we need to," Brady said. "We've got to play our best when it means the most, and we need to start winning close games."

Severe economic loss for European forest land expected by 2100

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? By 2100 the climate change is expected to reduce the economic value of forest land by 14 to 50 %, which equates to a potential damage of several hundred billion Euros unless effective countermeasures are taken. This is the conclusion of the first pan-European study on the economic effects of climate change on forest land. It was conducted by an international team of scientists led by Marc Hanewinkel from the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL.

The paper was published online in the journal Nature Climate Change on 23 Sept. 2012.

Even by a moderate climate change scenario, forecasted changes in temperature and precipitation will heavily influence the range of most tree species. Cold-adapted and mesic species such as Norway spruce, which to date contributes to a large part to the economic value in European forests, will experience large range contraction in the long run. An international team of scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute WSL, the Forest Research Institute of Baden-Wuerttemberg (Germany), the Alterra/Wageningen University and Research Centre (The Netherlands), the European Forest Institute (Finland), and the University of Freiburg (Germany) found that under the three IPCC climate change scenarios* analyzed in this study, Norway spruce will shift northward and is likely to lose large parts of its current range in Central, Eastern and Western Europe (figures 1 and 2). In higher elevations of the Alps spruce might possibly survive. On the other hand, more drought-adapted but slow-growing Mediterranean species like oaks (i.e. Cork oak and Holm oak) may benefit from climate changes and expand their ranges much further north than today. In the long run, these species will increase to, on average, more than 32 % of the forest land in Europe (excluding Russia) under the moderate scenario from its current range of 11 %, to more than 28 % under the mild scenario and to more than 40 % of the forest land under the extreme scenario.

Climate change is expected to strongly affect tree species distribution within European forests. By 2100, when Norway spruce might have disappeared in many regions, between 21 and 60 % (34 % on average) of European forest land will be suitable only for a Mediterranean oak forest type with low economic returns for the timber industry. These slow growing forests will also sequester less carbon than today's forests. By 2100 -- depending on interest rate and climate scenario applied -- the calculated loss varies between 14 and 50 % (28 % on average) of the current value of forest land in Europe. At the end of this century, the loss may total 190 billion Euros on average under a moderate IPCC climate scenario and vary between 60 and 680 billion Euros in all three climate scenarios.

Is planting drought-adapted species a viable alternative?

Unless the climatic impact is compensated with countermeasures, Europe will have to cope with forests of less economic value and with less contribution to climate change mitigation than today's more productive forests. At a minimum, adaptive management actions may be necessary, but even the introduction of more productive species from outside Europe such as Douglas Fir, Atlas Cedar, Pine or Eucalyptus species might have to be considered.

In the Swiss Plateau and the Pre-Alps, mainly oak species from Central and Southern Europe as well as beech are expected to replace Norway spruce and Silver fir, if any of these scenarios will come true. This might affect the timber industry, which, since many decades, heavily depends on spruce and fir. Forest owners in Switzerland have to expect that their revenue will decrease unless effective countermeasures are implemented.

* = IPCC climate change scenarios (three out of 40 scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC):

  • B2 (mild; regional, sustainable)
  • A1B (moderate; balanced)
  • A1FI (extreme; fossil-fuels intensive)

Data from more than 6000 forest plots all over Europe analyzed

The international team of scientists estimated the economic impact of projected climate change for a wide range of temperature increases (between 1.4 and 5.8?C, on average, until 2100). In addition, they used a database of 6129 forest plots, regularly distributed across Europe on a 16x16 km grid covering about 2.06 mio km2 of forest land and a high-resolution model that predicts presence or absence of 32 tree species under different climate scenarios in Europe.

Dickey wins 19th as Mets top Marlins

By IRA PODELL

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:40 p.m. ET Sept. 22, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - For eight innings, the only real drama that filled pumped-up Citi Field was whether R.A. Dickey would get a shutout to go along with his 19th win.

When the New York Mets' star knuckleballer went back to the mound for the ninth, a shutout seemed like a foregone conclusion, but moments later all Dickey could do was watch from the bench and hope that struggling reliever Jon Rauch could shut down the Miami Marlins with the tying run on second base.

Rauch came through by the slimmest of margins, and Dickey and the Mets breathed a sigh of relief when they escaped with a 4-3 victory on Saturday.

Dickey allowed a four-pitch walk and a double to open the ninth, and Rauch surrendered a three-run homer to John Buck before striking out Gorkys Hernandez to end it.

"We ultimately got the win but it was definitely a little harder than we wanted it to be," said Jason Bay, who staked Dickey to a 2-0 lead with a second-inning homer.

Just hours after the Mets snapped a nine-game losing streak at Citi Field on Friday and scored more than three runs in their home ballpark for the first time since Aug. 12, New York broke out the bats again in front of a crowd of 30,332.

The Marlins rallied but couldn't finish off the comeback after Buck was awarded a home run when a video review determined his drive struck the left-field foul pole.

"I knew it hit the pole and I was just waiting for the reversal," Bay said. "It was kind of like, `this can't be happening."'

The Mets have won consecutive games at home for the first time since topping Houston on Aug. 25-26 - the last two games before the start of their most recent home skid.

Dickey got to 19 wins on his third try after two consecutive losses - the only time this season he has been beaten in back-to-back starts.

Washington's Gio Gonzalez, who earned his 20th win on Saturday, and Dickey are the only major leaguers with at least 19.

The knuckleballer batted for himself in the eighth, despite already throwing 104 pitches, and heard cheers and chants of his name when he returned to the mound in the ninth.

He tried to finish his fourth shutout of the season but was pulled after Greg Dobbs led off with a walk and Donovan Solano followed with a double.

"Nobody wants this guy to win more than me," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I could not let him get into a situation where he might lose that game."

Rauch then allowed Buck's 12th homer before getting three outs for his fourth save.

"I had a quick eighth, so I was game to try to give the fans a treat and a complete game," Dickey said. "I felt pretty good and I told Terry, `I'm good.' He has trusted me all year. I went back out there and tried it, and he pulled me when he needed to and we won the game."

Dickey yielded two runs, six hits - including three by Solano and two by Gil Velazquez - and two walks.

Dickey nearly provided another thrill with his bat when he sent a long drive to left field with the bases loaded in the sixth, but was robbed of an extra-base hit when Bryan Petersen jumped into the fence to make a highlight-reel catch.

"That is as close as I'll probably ever get," Dickey said. "That was all this old man can do. I cheated on the pitch. He threw me a good pitch to hit. Everything was perfect."

After a wild pitch on a knuckler, Dickey worked out of a jam in the second inning by striking out Hernandez and Jose Reyes with runners on second and third.

"He struck out the guy when he needed to strike out the guy," Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said. "That was a huge, huge inning for him."

Five of Dickey's wins this season have come against the last-place Marlins, the only team in the NL East behind the Mets. He should get one more start against them in the final series of the season in Miami.

"He obviously is good. It's not like he's just had our number," Buck said. "We didn't single-handedly hand him the Cy Young. He did have to face some other teams. We're obviously a big part of the reason."

Dickey struck out four to retake the league lead from Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw and will be in position to reach 20 wins for the first time when he faces Pittsburgh on Thursday in his final home start of the season.

Bay provided the punch against Mark Buehrle (13-13) in the second by launching a two-run homer to straightaway center for his eighth of the season. It was Bay's second consecutive shot against Buehrle, having hit a grand slam against the left-hander in Miami on Sept. 2 to pace the Mets to a 5-1 win.

Scott Hairston pushed New York's lead to 3-0 in the fourth when he led off with his 19th homer of the season and second in two days. Hairston had to wait through a video review before he finished his trot in from second base, as the ball was originally ruled in play off the center field fence.

Replays showed the ball struck the batter's eye above the blue wall 408 feet from home plate.

Buehrle allowed four runs and five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in six innings of his 30th start of the season. He is six innings shy of reaching 200, which would give him 12 straight seasons of 10 wins, 30 starts and 200 innings - the longest current streak in the majors.

NOTES: Mets closer Frank Francisco was again unavailable after feeling soreness in his elbow. ... Dickey is the first Mets pitcher with 19 wins since Frank Viola (20) and Dwight Gooden (19) did it in 1990. ... Lucas Duda returned to the Mets lineup one day after being pulled from the game by Collins for not running out a pop fly that dropped. ... Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton sat out a fourth consecutive game because of a strained muscle in his side. ... Buehrle is 0-3 against the Mets in his career, all this season.
