Greenlight Roundup 1 | Video Game Blog, Video Games Reviews ...

With an already shockingly large number of games submitted to Steam?s Greenlight program, it?s easy to find something new every day, though the volume of content can be difficult to digest. Enter Greenlight Roundup. The goal was originally to find three games in Greenlight?s library (some of the more popular titles, sure, but also a lot of the more hidden jewels in the service that could otherwise be passed over) and look into what content the developers have released, and give it an ?Up? or ?Down? vote of our own, but this ended up being so long, it was cut to just two: one good, and one bad (neither being necessarily popular). Before we get into it, all these games have trailers available online, which are referenced a lot in the digest, so they?re all put at the bottom of the page for you to watch at any point to get up to speed. Alright, here we go:

One look, and you can tell the game was made by a talented artist.

There?s no typo there; Simon Mesnard?s First Person Adventure Game seems to reside in a similar setting as the classic novel & film 2001: A Space Odyssey, though with a few variations. From what one can see, the giant monoliths have been scaled down to small cubes, and instead of attracting large numbers of primitive humans, the lone cube in the game?s trailer draws the player away from the safety of their space station orbiting the Earth and off into a new world of?beautifully?rendered sets and mysterious intrigue.

While on the surface it is a bit hard to determine exactly what kind of gameplay one incurs in 2011: ASA, small clips of the player picking up objects from the environment around him soon makes it clear that this is one of the most visually appealing Point & Click Adventures in a long time. With settings varying between indoor gardens, deserts, oceans, and of course a massive space station, as well as a short glimpse of a silhouetted character who possibly shares these locations with you, the plot still remains largely a mystery, but many of these breath-taking vistas are enough to make me want to know what I?ll be doing in them. It didn?t take long for me to cast a positive vote for 2011: A Space Adventure.

Guh? Calling the Source Mod adaptation of??Slender?a game based off of the Slenderman mythos is giving it a bit too much credit at times. For one, I?d rather not call it a game: it?s just the download game?Slender now sharing an engine with?Half Life.

With a new four-player co-op mode, this character model just might be scarier than the rest of the game.

In all fairness, not much is new. It?s got better graphics, now that it?s been upgraded to the Source engine, but from the uploaded pictures of the actual character models, I don?t think that means they have gotten objectively better. Despite what anyone says about the original game?Slender, this adaptation has essentially taken one large leap backwards, in that this mod now features an online co-op mode with up to four players.? Much of the legitimate suspense in the original?Slender was generated by the player?s sheer loneliness. There is no one to protect you, and there is no one to keep you safe. Add four players in, and a lot of the feeling is lost.

Aside from that, there really isn?t much to say; a new map was added, so now you can play in a run-down hospital, but I don?t want to go into a list of games you can find for free online that can give you that plus a decent plot to boot. I can see where the new gameplay mode was going, though: one begins the game feeling more comfortable than they should, and then as players begin to get picked off, the tension begins to build for the one remaining PC who is now the Slenderman?s only target- that much is understood. But there comes a point when you have to realize the innate flaws in this design, in that the suspense is now aimed at a single player, rather than all four, so what of them now? One guy walks away dissatisfied at being the first to go, the second man was probably getting cocky with one person gone and paid the atmosphere no mind anyway, and then the third one to go is just going to be rather mad at being so close to survival only to be robbed of it in one fell swoop. Unless you count on being the last man out every time (which may very well be determined by chance), a Down vote is recommended for this one.
