TD Charitable Foundation Supports EMHS Youth Healthy Lifestyle ...

Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS) is pleased to announce the TD Charitable Foundation, funded by TD Bank, has awarded the Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program with a $50,000 grant. The program was created in 2008 as a childhood obesity prevention project.

The Let?s Go! program uses four easy-to-remember and consistent healthy lifestyle messages throughout EMHS communities in the form of 5-2-1-0: Five or more fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of screen time; one or more hours of physical activity; and zero sugary drinks, more water and low-fat milk. Let?s Go! has 10 strategies for success and four healthy habits that are both evidence-based. The 10 strategies align with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention?s Recommended Community Strategies and Measurements to Prevent Obesity in the US, and also align with recommended Institute of Medicine strategies.

Amber Desrosiers, EMHS Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program coordinator says, ?Maine ranks thirty-ninth among states in the percentage of overweight or obese youth. Childhood obesity places Maine youth at both immediate and future risk of poor health. Nutrition and physical activity are the primary determinants of obesity, both of which can lead to diabetes, and suggests a need for prevention interventions involving local organizations and stakeholders. We are grateful that the TD Charitable Foundation recognizes the seriousness of childhood obesity in this region. Because of their generosity, EMHS will be able to provide much needed resources and tools to children in 272 towns in Aroostook, Hancock, Kennebec, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Somerset, and Washington counties.?

The funding provided by TD Charitable Foundation will benefit local rural communities and allow EMHS to complete its five year project to build healthy childhood nutrition and fitness habits into local cultures and evaluate the effectiveness of these programs.
