Belinda Ofori, a former student of Wesley Girl?s High School in Cape Coast, has written her name in history books by becoming the first Ghanaian Visual Arts student to emerge as the Overall Best Student in the WAEC examinations for 2012.
The 19-year-old obtained eight A1s in subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, Elective Mathematics, Graphic Design, Jewelry and General Knowledge in Arts.
Ms Ofori, a first-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, is currently pursuing first degree in Communication Design.
Belinda started her primary education at Oniwaa Memorial International School Tafo in Kumasi and proceeded to KNUST JHS where she was adjudged the Best Artist of the year in 2008.
She told DAILY GUIDE that she was astounded when she heard the good news at Wesley Girls Speech and Prize Giving Day? this year.
Belinda, a staunch Christian, who worships with Winner Palace Chapel, Kumasi, attributed her historic feat to the power of God.
She said God had been her protector and provider since she started her education, adding that God strengthened her to opt for Visual Arts at the SHS level.
Belinda, who is very brilliant, said her parents and loved ones entreated her to choose Science ahead of Visual Arts because of her intelligence.
The 19-year-old, whose love for art started at an early stage, said despite the discouragement and pressure she opted for Visual Arts because she loves the subject.
She said the demands negatively affected her studies in the first year, but due to encouragement and support from her teachers she picked up in the last semester of the first year.
Belinda mentioned Ato Micah, Patience Lartey, Mr. and Mrs. Lartey and Mr. Benson as some of the teachers whose invaluable contribution, sustained her in her academic endeavor, and thanked them for their immense support.
She said, ?I like reading books but I also like being practical about everything, especially art.? I love Visual Arts so much and I consider the subject as part of my life.
Belinda disclosed that she is humble, studious and prayerful.
She said she carefully selected her friends in school and always averted peer pressure.
Belinda cautioned parents and guardians not to impose their preferred subjects on their children, stressing that she couldn?t have achieved the historic feat with other subjects.
Belinda said she topped her class in Communication Design in the first semester at KNUST.
?My dream is to graduate with flying colours and become a top international designer like Prada and Burberry.?
She heaped praises on her parents, Michael Ofori and Juliet Ofori for satisfying her needs.
The national awards would take place tomorrow, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.
