'Jealous' Boyfriend Allegedly Abducts Girlfriend, Locks-down College Campus

Police locked down Harrisburg Area Community College?s campus after reports that a student was abducted from her classroom by her boyfriend, according to CBS 21.

Administrators issued a campus safety alert at 7:16 Wednesday night on the Harrisburg campus, reading simply, ?HACC Harrisburg Campus closed ? domestic dispute. Harrisburg PD searching for individuals. Remain in classroom. If not in classroom, exit the campus.?

Campus safety alerts are most often issued when there is an immediate threat to individuals on campus. Since the alleged abductor remained on campus for a short time after the incident, police said, the lockdown wasn?t lifted until just before 8 p.m. when they believed the suspect had left the scene.

Harrisburg police arrested Julian Amway, 33, around 8:30 p.m. A notice posted on HACC?s website read:

Situation update - We just received an update from the Harrisburg Police Department. Our student is safe. The male is in custody.

ABC 27 indicated jealousy as a motive.

Police said Amway eventually became enraged and forced the woman out of the classroom and the building, then drove her around the Harrisburg area while repeatedly berating and hitting her.

At one point, police said he made the woman drive to the Dock Street Dam at a high rate of speed. Once there, she ran from the vehicle, but police said Amway chased her and caught up to her just as officers arrived.

Police charged Amway with kidnapping, simple assault, terroristic threats and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is held at Dauphin County Prison on $500,000 bail.

Students told the Patriot News the event left them shocked and confused. Ron Gavin, a 22-year-old business student, said he heard from a classmate?s mother that an active shooter was on campus. Through the duration of the lockdown, he thought the campus was under attack.

"We didn't hear any shots or see anything until we came outside and saw all the police," he told the paper.
