Taufik Hidayat fails to claim an international title in 2012 ? Badminton Review

Indonesia?s ace shuttler Taufik Hidayat has made a long lasting impact in the badminton arena by becoming World and Olympic champion during his career but it seems the Men?s Singles maestro has lived his moments of glory.

In the ongoing season, World Number 11 graced almost every prominent event with his presence but he failed to claim top spot on the victory stand in all of these tournaments.

The Indonesian campaigner participated in the prestigious tournaments like 2012 London Olympics, BWF Thomas Cup Finals, Badminton Asia Championships, All England Open, India Open and Japan Open.

Taufik Hidayat?s last title was 2011 Syed Modi Memorial India Open Grand Prix Gold as he could not raise country?s flag in any tournament during this year. Though, he managed to surge into knock out rounds of All England Open, Swiss Open and Japan Open but failed to end long streak of failures.

His last hope was 2012 Syed Modi International India GPG as he was the defending champion and critics were giving him better odds in the absence of top ten shuttlers of the world.

However, he proved all the predictions wrong by crashing out of the opening round. He looked completely out of form as an unknown Indian campaigner Pratul Joshi cast him out with a staggering knock.

The 31-year-old Taufik could stay on court for just two games and bid farewell after a receiving a straight-set defeat. He lost first set with 17-21 margin and then surrendered in the second set after reading 12-21 score on the board.

This short-lived tussle started with couple of gruelling rallies as both contenders put all they had to gain an early advantage. They remained equal in the establishing rallies but then Taufik committed some fatal mistakes that triggered the collapse.

First sign of trouble came when he let four consecutive points slip from his hands after 7-7 and allowed his lower ranked challenger to establish a decent lead. His bad patch continued also in the latter part of game as Pratul did not spare any loophole and bagged this vital match point.

Unexpectedly, former World and Olympic champion proved a sitting duck in the second set as the Indian shuttler hunt him down with great ease. Taufik Hidayat put a below par performance and lost this crucial set in a disgraceful manner. This was a wrap and he had to face an early exit from this GP Gold event. ?????

This long series of disappointing outings has brought him under fire and critics have started raising question about his future in the international arena. There are rumours that he will announce his retirement in next edition of Indonesia Open.
