World News - Report: Syria is torturing children, UN human rights ...

Syrian state television broadcast footage of President Bashar-al-Assad making a rare public appearance in the Baba Amr neighborhood of Homs, the heart of the uprising and where his crackdown has been most brutal. ITN's John Ray reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Syrian authorities are detaining and torturing children, the United Nations' human rights chief, Navi Pillay said, according to a report.

"They've gone for the children -- for whatever purposes -- in large numbers," the BBC quoted her as saying. "Hundreds detained and tortured... it's just horrendous.

"Children shot in the knees, held together with adults in really inhumane conditions, denied medical treatment for their injuries, either held as hostages or as sources of information."

Ms Pillay, a?lawyer, said she believed that the UN Security Council had enough reliable information to warrant referring Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

"I feel that investigation and prosecution is a crucial element to deter and call a stop to these violations," she told the BBC.

Ms Pillay said she believed that the UN Security Council had enough reliable information to warrant referring Syria to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Syria accepts Annan peace plan, but clashes continue

Meanwhile, the United States has urged the Syrian opposition to unite and pledge to respect minority rights in a future Syria should President Bashar Assad be driven from power, and warned armed rebels and government forces against committing human rights abuses.

Disunity among the Syrian opposition to Assad has fed fears that Syria could slide into sectarian and ethnic conflict, much as Iraq did after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Skeptical of peace plan
This has worried some governments, including the United States which would otherwise be glad to see Assad's downfall, after a year in which Assad has been using the army to crush efforts to end his political dominance in Syria.

Str / AP

Anti-government clashes continue as Western and Arab nations launch a diplomatic offensive to halt the violence.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged the Syrian opposition to lay out a vision of an inclusive Syria in which minority rights are respected.

"They must be able to clearly demonstrate a commitment to including all Syrians and protecting the rights of all Syrians," Clinton told reporters.

"We are going to be pushing them very hard to present such a vision in Istanbul," she said ahead of a gathering of Western and Arab nations in Istanbul on Sunday to discuss a political transition in Syria.

Earlier on Tuesday, the New York Times reported that a meeting of Syrian opposition groups in Istanbul was marred when a veteran dissident and Kurdish delegates walked out, saying their views were not heard.

U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford said on Tuesday in Washington that he had received reports that armed Syrian opposition groups had engaged in human rights abuses. He said he had warned the rebels, as well as Assad, against committing such abuses.

Both Clinton and Ford were skeptical of reports that Syria's government had accepted the peace plan of U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan.

"Given Assad's history of over-promising and under-delivering, that commitment must now be matched by immediate actions," Clinton said.

Ford left Syria last month because of the violence but remains the U.S. ambassador. At a hearing on Capitol Hill, he was asked about statements by the U.S.-based group Human Rights Watch that armed opposition groups in Syria had committed abuses including kidnapping, detention and torture of security force members and government supporters.

Murad Sezer / Reuters

Syrian National Council President Burhan Ghalioun is greeted by council members during a news conference after their meeting in Istanbul on Tuesday.

"We had reports like that last year, when some of the fighting in Homs became really serious," Ford said. "We raised it even in Syria when my embassy was still open.

"We discussed it with some of the local revolution council representatives -- who are themselves not members of armed groups, but certainly are in contact with them -- and emphasized that they would be held to a standard on this if they wanted support from western countries."

The United States had also raised the matter with the Syrian National Council, the main opposition umbrella group, Ford said.

He added there was a danger that more hard-liners who ignored human rights would gain influence on both sides in Syria the longer the conflict goes on.

Assad's government, Ford said, had committed "massive human rights violations that may amount to crimes against humanity."

The United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed in Syria's year-old uprising against Assad. Syria says rebels have killed some 3,000 security force members and blames the violence on "terrorist" gangs.

Human Rights Watch also has accused Assad's forces of human rights abuses, including using human shields in northern Syria in their efforts to crush the rebellion.

Assad on Tuesday was filmed taking a tour of Baba Amr, the district of Homs recently bombarded by his forces.

Mo Lawal?s dismissal emphasizes need for Zuffa policy on Twitter

"King" Mo Lawal was cut from Strikeforce yesterday. He received a suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for a banned substance after his January win over Lorenz Larkin. Shortly after his hearing with the NAC, Lawal called a commissioner a racist b**** over Twitter. According to Strikeforce's Scott Coker, Lawal's reaction was to blame for the dismissal.

Calling a woman the b-word is wrong, no matter the circumstances, which is exactly what I told Lawal yesterday. He's been a friend of mine since long before either of us were involved in MMA, so I told him what I would tell any friend of mine. If you don't want it said about your mother, you shouldn't say it about any woman. Though I don't know if I influenced his decision, he deleted the tweet not long after.

What he tweeted was wrong, but he should not have lost his job, just like Miguel Torres should not have lost his job late last year. I didn't think Torres should have lost his job then, nor did I think Forrest Griffin should have lost his job over a tweet about rape, or Rashad Evans over his comment about child abuse, or Joe Rogan for calling me the c-word, or White for calling MMA reporter Loretta Hunt the b-word.

What every one of these cases called for is punitive action. Some combination of a reprimand, a fine that will benefit the aggrieved parties, a public apology, a suspension, and corrective action like sensitivity training would be more appropriate than being fired. The offender would be more likely to learn something from their offenses than if they suddenly have to look for a job, or if there had been little done about the offense.

The problem, once again, is that Zuffa has no policy on fighter (and commentator) behavior. A fighter doesn't know if he's crossed the line until he's crossed it. Fighters can't even learn from each other's actions because there is no consistency on how incidents are treated. Considering how White called Hunt the same word that Lawal to describe the commissioner and then never apologized for it (he only apologized for using a slur against homosexuals), how could Lawal know Zuffa would have a problem with it?

The UFC usually holds their fighters' summit in June. It's the end of March. They have a few months to formulate a policy that is clear and fair to fighters.

How to Grow Your Small Business | SucceedAsYourOwnBoss.com

Grow Your BusinessFor those small business owners who survived the startup phase and are now ready to grow your business, there are numerous possibilities. Keep in mind, growing your business will depend on what business you are in and how much money, time and sweat equity you?re willing to invest all over again.?Here are four ways to kick start growth in your small business.

When thinking about how to grow your business first, consider opening a new location, franchising your business, look for markets overseas by expand globally, and make sure you are taking part the biggest market in the world by expanding on the internet.

Open another location. Your first option for growth is to open an additional location. Now, this can be really tricky. You need to look at the economic environment and trends for indications that theirs is enough business to support an additional location. Make sure your operations, banking an processes are all in order. It will be important to have a strong management team to send into the new location. One of the biggest decisions you?ll need to make is determining how you will finance your expansion.? Choose your new location carefully. Don?t let you wallet drive your decision making or you could end up in the poor house.

Turn your business into a franchise.?I recently interviewed Dina Dywer Owens, Former Chair of the International Franchise Association (IFA) and she suggests anyone interested in turning their business into a franchise, check out the free resources at the IFA?s website www.franchise.org. ?and hire a professional franchise consultant to help. Now if you are really interested in this growth strategy, you must streamline all your internal systems and marketing processes first. Then, start networking within the franchise community, become a member of the IFA and find a good franchise attorney as well as a mentor who?s been through the franchise process. Here?s more information about how to be successful in a franchise business.

Expand globally. If you are an internet business, you may already have clientele from across the world, but there are many programs and services that will help sell products overseas markets including China, India, South America and across Europe specifically. Check out my recent interview with former under secretary of international trade Frank Lavin on How to Export to China. In most cases to export outside of the US, you?ll need a foreign distributor who?ll carry an inventory of your product and resell it in their domestic markets. Trade groups and foreign chambers of commerce in the U.S., are good places to find distributors. Also check out the government?s website businessusa.gov which is a great resource for small businesses looking to export outside the US.

Expand on the Internet. Are You Googleable? In many business circles, if you can?t be found on the internet you do not exist.? Make sure that you have a useful website that tells people how to hire you within 3 seconds of arrival onto your home page.? Think of your website as the front door to your business. Be sure that you use an e-commerce solution such as shopify.com or bigcommerce.com that also has the ability to mirror your online store on your facebook fan page. An online store will bring you customers that your brick and mortar business could never reach.

Shocker: Paul Ryan's budget means more big tax cuts for the rich.

The tax cuts in Paul Ryan?s 2013 budget plan would result in huge benefits?for high-income people and very modest?or no? benefits for low income working households. No surprise here.

No surprise here, but the tax cuts in Paul Ryan?s 2013 budget plan would result in huge benefits?for high-income people and very modest?or no? benefits for low income working households, according to a new analysis by the Tax Policy Center.

Skip to next paragraph Howard Gleckman

Howard Gleckman is a resident fellow at The Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, the author of Caring for Our Parents, and former senior correspondent in the Washington bureau of Business Week. (http://taxvox.taxpolicycenter.org)

Recent posts

TPC looked only at the tax reductions in Ryan?s plan, which also included offsetting?but unidentified?cuts in tax credits, exclusions, and deductions. TPC found that in 2015, relative to today?s tax system, those making $1 million or more would enjoy an average tax cut of $265,000 and see their after-tax income increase by 12.5 percent. By contrast, half of those making between $20,000 and $30,000 would get no tax cut at all. On average, people in that income group would get a tax reduction of $129. Ryan would raise their after-tax income?by 0.5 percent.

Nearly all middle-income households (those making between $50,000 and $75,000) would see their taxes fall, by an average of roughly $1,000. Ryan would increase their after-tax income by about 2 percent.

Ryan would extend all of the 2001/2003 tax cuts, and then consolidate individual rates to just two?10 and 25 percent. In addition, he?d repeal the Alternative Minimum Tax, reduce the corporate rate from 35 percent to 25 percent, and kill?the tax provisions of the 2010 health reform law.

Earlier this week, TPC projected the tax cuts in Ryan?s budget would add $4.6 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade, even after extending the 2001/2003 tax cuts, which would add another $5.4 trillion to the deficit.

Ryan argues that eliminating or scaling back deductions, credits, and exclusions ought to be part of the GOP fiscal plan. But he won?t say how.

Cuts in those tax preferences could make a big difference in determining who wins and who loses from the tax portion of his budget. But until House Republicans describe which they?d cut, there is no way to estimate what those base-broadeners would mean.

In truth, unless Republicans raise?taxes?on capital gains and dividends, it is hard to imagine the highest income households getting anything other than a windfall from this budget. Other tax preferences, such as the mortgage interest deduction, are just not that valuable to them.

And since no high-profile Republicans want to raise taxes on gains and dividends (and many would cut investment taxes even further) this budget would likely result in a huge tax cut for those who need it least. ?That?s not a great way to start an exercise whose stated goal is to eliminate the budget deficit.

92% Beauty and the Beast

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (84) | Rotten (7) | DVD (36)

The greatest animated film ever made and one of the screen's great musicals hardly needs this (3D) sort of sprucing up.

What you gain in an extra, faked dimension you lose in lively, genuine beauty.

The set pieces are narcotically pleasing, especially the Busby Berkeley-style dancing-kitchenware spectacular, "Be Our Guest," and the romantic ballroom centerpiece that brings Beauty and her Beast together.

The 3-D pops out to enhance the drama or energy of scenes in which settings are large and integral to the action.

Some youthful memories are better not revisited, but this definitely isn't one of them. Sometimes you can go home again.

It is a surprise, in a time of sequels and retreads, that the new film is so fresh and altogether triumphant in its own right.

I admit it: I wrote this more than 20 years ago. But, like " Beauty and the Beast" itself, I think it stands the test of time.

Disney, please understand ... what people are actually showing up for ... they just want to see classic Disney on the big screen. The 3D is incidental.

Disney's gorgeous 1991 animated version of the classic fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast" gets the same 3D treatment that was recently given to "The Lion King."

Watching this in a theater definitely makes it feel less like a "cartoon" and more like a significant film. Cogsworth poking Le Fou in the butt with a sword aside.

One of the brightest jewels in Disney's crown, Beauty and the Beast's 3D reissue takes nothing away and makes the film's brilliance even easier to appreciate; the movie is more beautiful and timeless than it ever was.

Beauty and the Beast is just as enchanting 20 years after its initial release.

The apex of an art form, a justly celebrated classic, and the best animated movie of any sort ever put on screen at any time.

The lines have begun to show in Belle's tale, which remains enjoyable but feels more like a quaint artifact than the masterpiece it once was declared to be.

Both TANGLED EVER AFTER and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are sure to enthrall audiences everywhere, even if the 3D doesn't really add much of anything to this animated classic.

A serviceable version of a classic fairy tale minus that crucial touch of magic.

And it is a joy to revisit the timeless pleasures of traditional Disney storytelling, with no attempts to add sizzle from celebrity voice talent or radio-friendly pop songs.

3D doesn't downplay the inherent artistry of the effort, but it doesn't enhance anything outside of ticket prices.

Beauty and the Beast looks beautiful and is sure to entertain, but this experience is superfluous at best-it was already a three-dimensional story long before these new technics.

Better remembered than seen, Beauty and the Beast has been treated unkindly not just by the years that have passed since it was released to enormous acclaim in 1991, but by a faddish 3D conversion.

Is Fergie Working On A Solo Or Black Eyed Peas Album?

'My brain's not really there right now,' Fergie tells MTV News of her musical hiatus.
By Christina Garibaldi

The Black Eyed Peas have certainly been enjoying their much-deserved break. Back in November, BEP announced they were going on an indefinite hiatus following three years on the road in support of their albums The Beginning and The E.N.D.

MTV News caught up with Fergie on Thursday (March 22) in New York, and she couldn't be happier being off the road and spending some time at home.

"I love being on break. I'm getting to do things I really didn't have the capacity to do on tour," Fergie said at the Voli Light Vodka Brunch. "I get more structure at home, I get more time with family, with my husband, with my dogs. I'm still cleaning out my closet, getting to decorate my house, just nesting. I love it."

Fergie has been keeping herself busy, though. Even though she won't be a judge on "The X Factor," the singer is set to release her third fragrance and is working on her shoe line.

"I'm more focusing on my other things, like my shoe line, I'm designing for that. I'm really getting to work from home, and I'm loving it," Fergie said. "Having all these creative juices flowing into more girly things and visual and things like that for me."

The last time the Peas took a break, Fergie released her first solo album, The Dutchess. The album produced three #1 singles: "London Bridge," "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Glamorous." Yet this time around, Fergie isn't very eager to have the spotlight all to herself.

"I'm always writing, but there's no current plans for a solo record or a Black Eyed Peas record. I was on tour for eight years. My brain's not really there right now," Fergie said. "It's kind of just a machine that kept on moving with no signs of stopping. Finally, it's break time."

The other members of the Black Eyed Peas have been keeping busy on personal projects as well, will.i.am is continuing to work on his next solo album, #WillPower, and will make an appearance on Justin Bieber's upcoming album, Believe. Taboo is working on his own solo project and heading overseas for the Ultramagnetic DJ Experience tour, and apl.de.ap will reportedly focus on being an education ambassador in the Philippines.

Do you want Fergie to release a solo album? Let us know in the comments!

Woods shares lead at Bay Hill

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) ? Even when he was winning with regularity, Tiger Woods rarely made it look this easy at Bay Hill.

He putted for birdie on every hole.

His longest putt for par was on the 18th, when his birdie try caught the right edge of the cup and left him about 3 feet coming back.

If the game looked familiar, so did his position Friday in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Woods ran off four straight birdies early in his round, then made back-to-back birdies late in the afternoon for a 7-under 65, giving him a share of the lead with Charlie Wi. It was the first time in 30 months on the PGA Tour that Woods has been atop the leaderboard going into the weekend.

"It was a solid round of golf," Woods said. "I felt like I actually hit it better yesterday than I did today. I've made more putts today, for sure. I felt great over the putter. My speed was good. I left a couple putts dead short, right in the center of the hole. Actually, it really could have been a really low round. A lot of positives today."

Wi, the 54-hole leader at Pebble Beach this year, rolled in a 25-foot birdie putt on his last hole for a 68 to join Woods at 10-under 134.

Former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell had an eagle-par-birdie finish for a 63, while Jason Dufner extended his solid play on the Florida swing with a 69. They were one shot behind at 135.

Woods last had the 36-hole lead in any tour event at the Australian Open in November, and he tied for third. On the PGA Tour, go all the way back to the Tour Championship in September 2009 to find the last time he was atop the leaderboard going into the weekend.

It looks even more ominous at Bay Hill, where Woods is a six-time winner.

"I want to win. Yes, absolutely," he said. "We've got a long way to go. It's not like it's over right now. We've got 36 holes to go."

Woods at least is in better shape than he was two weeks ago. His future looked as muddled as ever when Woods was taken off the golf course in a cart at Doral because of soreness and swelling in his left Achilles tendon, the same injury that forced him to miss three months and two majors a year ago.

One week later, he was practicing at Augusta National. Now, he's the player everyone is chasing on the weekend.

"I saw him on television at Doral and didn't look good there," said Ernie Els, who played with Woods at Bay Hill, and played with him when Woods shot 62 on the last day of the Honda Classic. "Today he was on, and today was the same as I saw at the Honda ? very on."

Woods only had a couple of nervous moments.

He ran off four straight birdies on the front nine to quickly get into the mix, and then couldn't decide how to play his tee shot on the 10th. It didn't help that earlier in the round, he looked over at adjacent first tee and saw Nick Watney ? affectionately known as "Rube" ? pipe his tee shot out-of-bounds to the right.

"I got over there and for some reason I'm thinking, 'You know, I probably really shouldn't hit this driver; I'll take something off of it, and just hit a little softy out there.' And bailed on it, because I didn't want to hit it right out-of-bounds," Woods said. "And I chalked that up to just not listening to my instincts of hitting a 3-iron down there or just chipping a 5-wood ? or not watching Ruby hit that shot."

Woods was lucky. The snap hook bounced off a net fence protecting the houses, and he had just enough room to play to the middle of the 10th green and walk away with par.

He also was disgusted with his approach to the par-5 16th, turning in anger and swiping at the ground. It wasn't a great shot, but it was dry, catching the left side of the green 50 feet away and setting up a two-putt birdie.

Woods also had a two-putt birdie at the par-5 sixth. He made birdies on the other par 5s with his wedge game. Over two rounds, he has had such improved control of his play that he hit 19 consecutive greens in regulation at one point. That streak ended on the 13th hole Friday, when he two-putted for par from on the fringe.

Some of that is familiarity.

"I've had a few places where I've felt comfortable and I've played well, and this is one of them," Woods said. "For some reason, I just understand how to play it."

And some of that is becoming more confident with his swing, especially how far he is hitting the ball. Woods said he was not hitting his irons as well before going to work with Sean Foley, and a straighter, tighter ball flight has led to more distance ? and more adjustments.

He felt as though he hit the ball better on Thursday in a round of 69, although he didn't have nearly as many birdie chances.

"My bad days are not as bad as they used to be," Woods said.

It was the fifth time Woods had had at least a share of the 36-hole lead at Bay Hill, and he has failed to win only once from that position. Woods served up several reminders that the tournament is only halfway over, along with gentle rebukes that it hasn't been that long that he's been in the hunt.

He was tied for the 54-hole lead at Abu Dhabi, finishing third behind Robert Rock. Woods played well at the Australian Open until a poor third round. As for winning, he counts that birdie-birdie finish to win the Chevron World Challenge, which counted toward the world ranking even though it featured an 18-man field from the top 50 in the world.

"So it really has not been as long as people might think it has been," Woods said. "I'm comfortable up there, and I feel like I'm playing well. We've still got a long way to go. We still have 36 holes to go. Still need to continue doing what I'm doing out there, just kind of plodding my way along."

Wi, who shared the 18-hole lead with Dufner, birdied four of his last six holes to catch up to Woods. From the right rough on the ninth hole, he hammered out a shot to 25 feet below the cup for one last birdie.

Wi and Woods grew up in southern California and have known each other since their junior days, though Wi is four years older.

"Tiger is the man, and it's going to be fun tomorrow," Wi said.

The best round came from McDowell, and it was a reminder of how far he has come in one year. McDowell had a dream season in 2010 by winning the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, winning the decisive point for Europe in the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor, then ending the year with a record comeback against Woods in the Chevron World Challenge.

McDowell had a hard time managing his time, much less his expectations, and the eye-opener was at Bay Hill last year when he shot 80.

This time, McDowell was 17 shots better.

"That 80 was a wake-up call, but I didn't wake up for another four months or so," McDowell said. "It was more of the panic button. It was a pretty awful four or five months for me.

"But like I say, I feel like you learn more from those types of experiences than you do from shooting 63 at Bay Hill. There's not much to learn out there except that if you play great and hole some putts, you can go low."

That's just what he did.

Dufner set the early pace and was the first to reach 10 under until going for the green on the par-5 sixth, misjudging the wind and going into the water to make bogey. Even so, it was another solid round in Florida. Dufner had the lead going into the weekend at Innisbrook, and now he is one shot behind at Bay Hill.

"I think any given day, I can go out and shoot 5 or 6 under, do it pretty comfortably," Dufner said. "If the putter were to get hot, I feel like I could shoot some lower scores. There has not been a lot of stressful situations that last two or three weeks."

The stress might pick up Saturday. Woods brings energy to the course when he's around the lead, especially at Bay Hill, and especially when it's been so long since he has won on the PGA Tour. He has gone 27 PGA Tour events without a trophy.

'Mad Men' Season Five: 10 Things You Need To Know

Brush up on what ad man Don Draper and the ad folks at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce have been up to as the AMC show returns Sunday after 17-month hiatus.
By Josh Wigler

Jon Hamm in "Mad Men"
Photo: AMC

"Mad Men," like the advertising world it revolves around, is a busy show. Lots of comings, lots of goings, lots of inside baseball, lots of Jon Hamm getting drunk. Making matters even more complicated is the fact that the 1960s-set AMC drama has been off the air for dangerously close to two years, thanks in large part to contract disputes between the network and "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner.

Now, "Mad Men" is finally set to return for its fifth season on Sunday night. But, as is often the case with the show, don't expect Weiner and company to welcome you back into the world of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce with an instruction manual. If you don't remember what went down in the last few seasons of the Emmy Award-winning show, that burden rests entirely on you.

So if you're behind on your "Mad Men" know-how, or simply need a refresher before Sunday night, don't sweat it: Keep reading for 10 things you need to remember about season four going into the weekend's big season-five premiere.

» Transformation was the name of the game throughout season four, particularly for Don "Don't Call Me Dick" Draper. The eternally elastic ad man spent much of last season contemplating his new identity as a divorcé, a Manhattanite and a newly minted partner at his struggling new agency. In the end, he found himself back where he started, but in slightly different surroundings: once again on the cusp of marriage, this time to his French-Canadian secretary, Megan Calvet.

» Don't remember Megan? She's the one with the teeth. Hard to forget. Trust me, she'll be even harder to forget after Sunday's season premiere.

» Peggy Olson was always a badass, but she was even more of a badass in season four. Her weird love affair with crazy drunk Duck Phillips came to an end, exchanged for a new budding romance with off-beat underground journalist Abe Drexler. At work, Peggy was one of few SCDP employees pulling their weight, but it wasn't just her professional work that brought her notice; she also engaged in one crazy long night with Don, resulting in newfound respect and appreciation between the two "Mad Men" leads.

» Meanwhile, Pete Campbell, the father of Peggy's little-seen baby, stepped into fatherhood himself once again, this time within his own marriage. He and wife Trudy welcomed a baby girl by the end of season four, a bright spot in what was otherwise a fairly dull year for the envious Pete. Though he's technically a partner at SCDP, Pete is only a junior partner, a comparatively lesser status he's constantly reminded of by main rival Roger Sterling.

» Speaking of Roger, the silver-haired glad-hander spent season four in an identity crisis that never really resolved itself. Feeling his importance in the ad world slipping away, particularly with the loss of his one-and-only major client Lucky Strike, Roger began lying to his coworkers and devoting more and more time to his personal memoirs, "Sterling's Gold." The memoirs are certainly gold all right, though not for the reasons Roger hoped.

» Roger's other main event in season four: reconnecting with longtime on-again, off-again lover Joan Holloway, who found herself pregnant as a result of their one-night stand. With both Roger and Joan having spouses to consider, the two agreed it was best for Joan to have an abortion. In the end, she didn't go through with the procedure — and by the end of season four, her military-serving husband Greg was led to believe that he's about to become a proud new dad. Developing, as they say.

» In other parent-child woes, the Draper household was a mess in season four, even looking beyond the Betty/Don breakup. Betty once again dealt with depression as her daughter Sally began acting out in shocking and increasingly sexualized ways. Her marriage with new husband Henry Francis was not all it was cracked up to be, which she owned up to in a season-closing scene opposite Don ... a confession that came right before Don broke the news to Betty that he had proposed to his secretary Megan. Poor Betty, she never wins.

» Speaking of Don and Betty's kids, remember that young actor who played their son Bobby? He'll look a little different in season five.

» "Mad Men" season four saw several other disappearing acts: There was no sign of Paul Kinsey, not a trace of Sal Romano and only a few quick (but hilarious) glimpses of Duck. But hey, at least Freddy Rumsen made a comeback in season four after wetting himself in season two's "Six Month Leave." This show can be grim, sure, but there are a few happy endings.

» In short, lots and lots happened in season four, more than we can summarize here. The short version, though, is that "Mad Men" is a complicated, intricate show with lots of moving pieces and parts, all of them extraordinarily fascinating. Grab a scotch (if you're of age), pay close attention and I promise you will find out what the money is for.

Are you looking forward to the "Mad Men" premiere? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter @roundhoward.

Oil rises to near $107 after US crude supply drop

Oil prices rose to near $107 a barrel Wednesday after a report showed U.S. crude supplies fell unexpectedly, a sign demand may be improving in the world's largest economy.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for May delivery was up 49 cents to $106.56 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $2.49 to settle at $106.07 per barrel in New York on Tuesday after Saudi Arabia said it could pump more oil to cover any shortages.

In London, Brent crude for May delivery was up 27 cents at $124.39 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories fell 1.4 million barrels last week, breaking a two-month trend of growing supplies. Analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted an increase of 2.1 million barrels.

Inventories of gasoline fell 1.4 million barrels last week while distillates rose 600,000 barrels, the API said.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest crude producer, said Tuesday it can quickly boost output by 25 percent if there is a sudden disruption in global supplies. Crude has jumped from $75 in October as traders worry a military conflict over Iran's nuclear program could cut that country's crude exports.

The European Union and the U.S. have imposed sanctions that make it tougher for Iran to sell its oil. In response, Iran has threatened to block oil shipments in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of world's oil supplies pass.

Kuwait said Tuesday it is increasing crude production and that Iran has assured its neighbors that it won't block the vital waterway.

"The Saudis have been cranking up output, presumably in an attempt to dampen further price increases," energy consultant and trader Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. However, "increased output won't necessarily reduce the Iranian risk premium."

Saudi Arabia also said it wanted to "provide adequate supplies of petroleum, stabilize oil markets and return oil prices to fair levels" for producers and consumers.

"Saudi Arabia clearly fears a scenario like in 2008, when the oil price climbed to nearly $150 a barrel by midyear, causing the global economy to slide into recession and forcing the price down to $30 a barrel within a matter of months," said a report from Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "Whether the oil price will fall toward the $100 mark, as Saudi Arabia hopes, will depend mainly on whether words are followed by actions. Reports of an expansion of oil shipments to the U.S. could be an indication that this is the case."

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 0.03 cent at $3.2370 per gallon and gasoline futures lost 0.7 cent to $3.3506 per gallon. Natural gas fell 0.4 cent to $2.331 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Satellite Sees 'Strongest Tornadoes in Years' Strike Texas

Editor's note: This story has been updated to include new information from the National Weather Service on the number and strength of the tornadoes.

A NOAA satellite spotted the line of powerful storms that ripped across south-central Texas last night (March 19), producing three tornadoes that left a path of destruction in their wake.

While officials were trying to assess the damage today, NASA produced a video based on images from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite.

Storm survey teams arrived at the site of splintered homes early this morning in Medina County, an area near San Antonio, in the aftermath of some of the most severe weather the south-central Texas region has seen in years, said Jon Zeitler, science and operations officer at the National Weather Service's Austin/San Antonio forecast office.

Already 2012 has been a busy tornado year. In early March, a month's worth of tornadoes struck the Midwest in a single day, killing dozens of people.

At least two dozen people were injured in the powerful Texas storms, two of them possibly seriously, yet no fatalities have been reported.

Late this afternoon (March 20), the forensic team confirmed the storm had produced three tornadoes. "They had quite a bit to survey," Zeitler said.?

The first and largest twister struck near Devine, Texas, and plowed a path 3.5 miles long? (5.6 kilometers). The quarter-mile-wide tornado was an EF-2, with winds 115 mph (185 kph), Zeitler said.

A second, smaller tornado, an EF-1 with winds 110 mph (177 klph), was 150 feet wide (45 meters), and hit near the town of Natalia.; it stayed on the ground for 7 miles (11 km).

A third tornado, an EF-2, hit near an unincorporated area.

In total, the tornadoes damaged 25 to 30 homes; about half were mobile homes and were largely destroyed, Zeitler said.?[The?Tornado?Damage Scale In?Images]

"These are the strongest tornadoes we've had in almost five years," Zeitler told OurAmazingPlanet.

Officials rely on storm spotters to confirm the presence of a tornado, and since the storms struck at night, the twisters were difficult to see.

Forecasters had been keeping an eye on a developing storm system beginning eight days earlier, Zeitler said, and the NWS offices were fully staffed when the first tornado watch was issued at 2:40 p.m. local time Monday (March 19).

The first of three tornado warnings was issued at 6:07 p.m. that evening; in total, warnings in the area were in effect for nearly four hours.

The NASA video reveals a furious swirl of thick clouds converging over the affected regions beginning Sunday night (March 18), at around 10 o'clock local time. In the video, the powerful storm front comes together in the shape of a wedge of clouds pointing south.

"The storms were moving around 15 to 25 mph, which isn't particularly fast," Zeitler said, "but that's why the warnings continued for such a long period and those storms maintained their severity for such a long time."

Texas has been in the grip of a severe drought over the last several years, and such severe storms had become a rarity in the 33 counties Zeitler's office monitors. However, it appears that this year, as La Ni?a's drought-inducing conditions fade away, more typical weather patterns ? and more severe weather ? may return to the area, he said.
