CBT: Michael Jordan's son arrested

According to the Associated Press, UCF guard Marcus Jordan was arrested in the early hours of Sunday following a disturbance outside of an Omaha, Nebraska hotel.

Jordan, who averaged 13.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game for the Knights last season, was released on Sunday night after being booked on charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstructing.

Apparently Jordan was arguing with two women in the driveway of an Embassy Suites hotel, and according to the police report he was ?very animated, intoxicated and uncooperative.?

Of course the first thing that many will mention is the fact that his father is none other than Michael Jordan.

But the bigger question at this point, one that?s been around for a few weeks now, is whether or not Jordan will return to UCF for his senior campaign.

While UCF has a relatively strong lineup of returning players and a chance to compete for a Conference USA title, Jordan has lost two close friends on the team. Jordan?s older brother, Jeff Jordan, and best friend, A.J. Rompza, are no longer with the basketball program and are pursuing their own post-college opportunities. It appeared Rompza would be staying in Orlando and providing moral support for Marcus Jordan, but he is now training elsewhere and could potentially play professionally overseas.

That report is from June 12, and there hasn?t been much made of the situation since. Whether or not Jordan returns the Knights have some talented pieces, led by Keith Clanton and Tristan Spurlock.

Transfers C.J. Reed (Bethune-Cookman) and Calvin Newell (Oklahoma; eligible in December) should help Donnie Jones? team on the perimeter.

Unfortunately for Marcus, he?ll have to deal with this legal issue while also deciding whether or not to play his senior season.

NATO says 3 service members killed

(AP) ? A man in an Afghan police uniform on Sunday shot and killed three foreign troops in southern Afghanistan, the U.S.-led coalition said in a statement.

It did not any other details, including the nationalities of the three. The statement said the man was wearing the uniform of an Afghan National Civil Order Police and that the incident was under investigation.

Their deaths bring to 215 the number of foreign troops killed so far this year.

Earlier, Afghan police said a roadside bomb killed five Afghan civilians in the eastern province of Ghazni.

Deputy provincial police chief Maj. Mohammad Hussain said a bus full of people struck the explosives Sunday morning while driving near Ghazni city, capital of the province of the same name.

He said another 11 people were wounded, and the dead included women and children. The bus was traveling from Kabul to the southern city of Kandahar.

R.A. Dickey wins 12th as Mets blank Dodgers

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:44 a.m. ET June 30, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) - R.A. Dickey made yet another strong bid to start for the National League in the All-Star game. He wants very much to get the nod - not just for himself, but for a unique group he refers to as the "Jedi Council of Knuckleballers."

Dickey, who resurrected his career several years ago with the specialty pitch, allowed three hits over eight innings to become the majors' first 12-game winner and lead the New York Mets to a 9-0 victory over the Dodgers on Friday night.

Daniel Murphy homered and drove in five runs, helping send Los Angeles to its season-worst sixth straight loss.

"I think every little boy imagines playing in an All-Star game. So in that regard, it would be a real honor, obviously," Dickey said. "But more than that, I think it would give a real legitimacy to what I do as a knuckleball pitcher. I think there are camps of people out there who don't view it as a very legitimate thing.

"I'm certainly thankful for the people who have come before me and done what I've done, because it's allowed me to have the foundation to build off of to become who I am presently," Dickey added. "I mean, I tried to be Charlie Hough. I tried to be Phil Niekro and Tim Wakefield, and it didn't work. So when I started bringing in who I was uniquely with that pitch, things started to kind of turn the corner for me."

The Dodgers' only hit over the first 6 1-3 innings was by opposing pitcher Aaron Harang, a two-out single in the third that fell between left fielder Kirk Niewenhuis and center fielder Andres Torres after some miscommunication. A.J. Ellis singled in the seventh and Tony Gwynn Jr. doubled in the eighth.

"He was throwing it harder than I'm used to seeing him throw it," Gwynn said. "He threw a lot of strikes with it. And when it's in the zone and the ball's moving like that, it's tough to make contact. It cuts, sinks, it does something different every time he throws it."

Dickey offered a much more colorful description of his primary weapon.

"The metaphor I would give is that if a traditional knuckleball is a butterfly, mine is more like a butterfly on steroids," he said. "It's more like a mosquito or a hummingbird than a butterfly, because of the velocity. It comes in and breaks late at the plate. It darts more and it's in and out of the strike zone. Phil Niekro once told me I had an `angry' knuckleball."

Dickey(12-1), who had consecutive one-hitters against Tampa Bay and Baltimore during interleague play, returned to form five days after giving up five runs in six innings against the Yankees.

"I didn't have a terrible knuckleball last time, and I didn't approach this game any differently," he said. "It just came out of my hand nice tonight, and I was able to repeat my mechanics and stay in the strike zone."

It was the fifth scoreless outing in a span of seven starts for the 37-year-old right-hander, who struck out 10 and walked one while establishing a career high for wins. He threw no more than 17 pitches in any inning and finished with 116.

Dickey has won 10 straight decisions in 13 starts with a 1.51 ERA since April 18. He finished June 5-0 with a 0.93 ERA.

In the second season of a two-year, $7.8 million contract, Dickey is the first starting pitcher in Mets history to begin a season 12-1 and the first to post at least 12 victories before the All-Star break since Bobby Jones in 1997. The franchise record for wins before the break is held by Tom Seaver, who was 14-5 in 1969 and 1970 going into the midsummer classic.

"One thing I've always tried to do for my team and for myself is to be a consistent, trustworthy product," Dickey said. "And the more often I can do that, the better."

The injury-depleted Dodgers, missing Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Mark Ellis, were shut out for the fifth time in 11 games - including all three at San Francisco - and have produced only two runs in their last 48 innings. They are in a 1-10 tailspin that has seen them go from five games ahead in the NL West to a game behind surging San Francisco. Los Angeles led by as many as 7 1/2 games on May 27.

Harang (5-5) gave up five runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings. Three of the hits were by Ruben Tejada, who was plunked by the right-hander's 116th and final pitch. Tejada also had an RBI single to cap a four-run seventh against rookie Shawn Tolleson.

Dickey retaliated by hitting Dee Gordon on the rear end with two outs in the sixth, eliciting a warning from plate umpire Todd Tichenor to Dickey and both dugouts. Gordon, who is generously listed at 160 pounds in the Dodgers media guide, was the fourth batter Dickey has hit this season.

Murphy, who struck out with the bases loaded to end the first, came through in the fifth with a two-run double and added a three-run homer in the seventh - just his third of the season. The other two came on Wednesday in a 17-1 rout of the Cubs at Wrigley field, ending a home run drought of 352 consecutive at-bats by Murphy.

NOTES: The Dodgers have one home run in their last 15 games. Dickey has allowed only two homers in 82 2-3 innings over his last 10 starts, after giving up at least one in each of his first five outings and seven in 30 1-3 innings. ... Davis dropped a foul popup along the first base line for the Mets' 60th error, one fewer than the Giants' league-worst total. But Dickey shrugged it off and struck out James Loney with his next pitch. ... Johan Santana, who starts for the Mets Saturday night against Nathan Eovaldi, has held the Dodgers to just two runs over 27 2-2 innings in his four starts against them and has won all of them.

European ban on Iranian oil tests sanctions limits

A policeman looks on as his car is fuelled at a SK Energy gas station in central Seoul June 26, 2012. South Korea became the first major Asian consumer of Iranian crude to announce a halt to imports after the government said they would be suspended from July 1 due to a European Union ban.? BRUSSELS, June 30 ? A European Union embargo on Iranian oil comes into effect tomorrow with Western governments hopeful economic pain will persuade Tehran to scale back its nuclear work but also mindful they are pushing against the limits of sanctions.

Combined with new measures coming into force this week in the United States, the European ban constitutes a major international push to pressure the Iranian government over its nuclear ambitions.

But even before its full implementation on July 1, EU heavyweights Britain and France have signalled more sanctions could be needed to force Tehran to address their concerns it is producing a nuclear bomb. Iran denies this, saying its nuclear work focuses on energy supplies and medical needs.

While the spectre of the oil ban and US measures appear to have brought Iranian negotiators back to the table in April and again in May and June, there has been little tangible result in terms of nuclear concessions.

Diplomats and experts say, however, the room for manoeuvre for European governments is shrinking.

"A lot of what could have been done has been done," a senior EU official said, highlighting the overarching concern that there are no more economic sectors where real pressure can be brought to bear.

"Oil is the main source of revenue for the regime. There are no significant sectors which could produce such an impact without adding unintended effects," he said.

The West is wary of imposing a broad trade embargo on Iran, that would be reminiscent of crippling sanctions against Iraq and South Africa that caused significant economic difficulties for their populations.

What EU governments may have to focus on in the coming months is the painstaking and slow process of combing through Iranian industry to find front companies for firms that face sanctions or go after evaders, and freeze their assets.

"We can always find new measures but ... it will not be such an easy process," the EU official said.

That process, some European diplomats say, is being hampered by a growing number of cases filed by Iranian firms in the European Court of Justice against sanctions decisions.

In two recent cases, the court ruled that European governments did not have sufficient proof that companies facing sanctions were involved in nuclear proliferation activities.

A European diplomat expressed concern such cases were setting legal precedents that would complicate efforts to freeze further assets. Hundreds of Iranian institutions and companies are already targeted.

"Iran is trying to destroy our sanctions system. These court cases seriously put in danger our sanctions regime," the diplomat said.

Web of interests

Iranian officials have been dismissive of the impact of sanctions on the oil sector. But there are signs the embargo, which encompasses prohibitions against the import of crude into Europe as well as transport and provision of insurance, has taken a toll on the economy and Iran's ability to secure cash.

Iran's crude oil exports, which according to EU estimates represent some 80 per cent of the government's export revenues and half of its income, have fallen by some 40 per cent this year, according to the International Energy Agency.

In the past, EU imports have accounted for about a fifth of Iran's crude sales abroad. With European insurers accounting for a vast majority of the world's tanker insurance, that prohibition is also having a major effect.

The Iranian rial has lost much of its value this year, inflation is running at some 20 per cent and the prices of staple foods and utility bills have multiplied in the last one to two years. Tens of thousands of Iranians have lost their jobs, and trade between Iran and European countries has halved in a year, according Eurostat data from March.

Meanwhile, nuclear talks have lost steam, after resuming in April following a 15-month hiatus, with Iran demanding sanctions relief before it takes steps to curb uranium enrichment.

Experts from Iran and six world powers - the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany - are set to meet in Istanbul next week. But at a round of political talks in Moscow this month, there was not enough common ground for negotiators to agree yet whether to meet again.

Diplomats in Brussels say no formal discussions are taking place on new sanctions. If governments agree the way forward would be to target more companies, the process could be slow.

But economists say by focusing, for example, on small banks which are taking over trade transactions from major financial institutions that face sanctions, European governments could tighten the noose.

"I am confident the Iranians are exercising considerable creativity in trying to come up with new mechanisms to evade restrictions," said Patrick Clawson, head of the Iran Security Initiative at US think-tank the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. ? Reuters
