What You Should Know About Natural ... - Critical Care 2011

Natural Allopathic Medicine is a book by Dr. Mark Sircus that is supposed to help people discover all about a new way of using natural methods to treat your health. This is a thorough medical text for individuals who wish to treat themselves. This book can also help you understand both how medical doctors and other health care professionals are treating your health and, possibly more importantly, how they aren?t. Find out the best methods of treating ailments without the need to resort to using prescription drugs that could potentially become pretty dangerous. Illnesses that are deadly like heart disease and cancer can be treated in a safe and effective manner.

Allopathic Medicine is a word used to speak about both Western Medicine it?s history of throwing prescription drugs to treat nearly all diseases. Natural Allopathic Medicine is the merging of certain medicines that are natural, which are already being used in emergency rooms and intensive care, and including them to chronic health care. Much of the medicine we use these days doesn?t even talk about the fact that there are several and potentially better ways to treat critically ill individuals. If you are somebody dealing with chronic illnesses and don?t feel like you?re getting the best possible treatments from your medical doctors and care providers, this book should offer you some hope.

While this is all relevant to your discovery, a few items about Cara Mengobati Diabetes carry more weight than others. But in the end you are the only person who can accurately make that call. We really are just getting started here, and hopefully you will be excited about what more is in store. The balance of this read contains much more that will help your specific situation. We believe you will find them highly relevant to your overall goals, plus there is even more.Emergency rooms and intensive care wards alike house a number of the safest and most effective medicines available. These are not pharmaceutical drugs, but concentrated nutritional medicines, like iodine, sodium bicarbonate, and magnesium chloride. There?s no real comparison between the naturally found treatments already being used and man made drugs with side effects that have the potential to cause damaging problems. Only if these substances come in an injectionable form are they regarded as medicines, so you can get magnesium chloride and sodium bicarbonate without the need of prescriptions. In the world of allopathic medicine, pretty much everything (including plain water) can earn a toxin label but several natural medicines are wholly side effect free. People?s bodies are already troubled by all of the poisons within them, so it?s a good idea to go a different route and not add more toxins to the body through prescription medicine.

With pharmaceuticals everything is harmful, so isn?t it time to try nutritional medicines that haven?t any side effects. This is actually the basis for the ebook and though it definitely makes sense, this still absolutely challenges the medical system that has already been put in place. This is, in fact, your life that is at risk so the choice is your choice to make. If the things that you happen to be doing are working, you should stay with them. If it hasn?t, have a look at Natural Allopathic Medicine and discover if there might not be something else which can help you feel better.

Western medicine hopes that you are going to believe that their method is what works best but they don?t quite have the greatest track record recently. Natural medicine might give you a better option given it is lacking in all of the side effects and it actually helps people today get well. The Natural Allopathic Medicine book is a great choice for a person that is at the end of his or her rope and does not see any other viable solutions ahead.

Helpful Hints For Completing Your Home Improvement Projects

Home improvement is a fantastic way to spruce up an outdated d?cor or to give your home a new look. There are so many different options when it comes to home improvement while fitting almost anybody's budget. Painting, wallpaper or even just new curtains are a few examples that will give any home a fresh look for a minimal price.

Windows

To reduce the number of unwanted pests in your home, cut back shrubbery and plants that are close to the windows. These plants are great homes to insects and spiders. If they rub up against your house and windows, they can easily crawl inside to find a warm dry place. Cut back these bushes to a foot or more from the side of the house and under the windows.

Add shutters to the outside windows on your home for a dramatic change in architecture. If your exterior looks a bit drab or flat, you can use this simple tip to give it much more depth and interest. Paint them a coordinating color to your house, often the color of the front door.

Try installing some flower boxes outside your home. Try installing them in your windows or on the front porch railings. They are a relatively cheap home improvement project too. You have to buy soil and regularly maintain the flowers though. If these aren't for you, try buying gardens in pots and placing them on your porch or front steps.

Velfac Fenster can be very interesting information for you.

A great tip for home improvement is to inspect your windows and see if they need to be replaced. The key here is to make sure you are going to get enough value for what you pay for. If the windows just need some maintenance it is better to do that than replace because windows are a major investment.

Doors And Windows

Insulate your home in order to save energy and lower your heating and cooling bills. Check the attic, as well as windows and doors. Any leaky spots should be fixed. Weather stripping can be added to doors and windows and new insulation can be added to the attic. You want to keep air that you paid to heat or cool, inside the home.

When it comes to home improvement, consider replacing your windows and doors. This not only has a chance of greatly improving the value of the home, but may also severely decrease the amount of money required to keep your house warm and dry. You can also add extra security with new doors and windows.

Hunt down drafts in your house around your windows and doors, and seal them with insulation or weather-stripping to make your home more energy-efficient. On a breezy day, hold a lit candle or a stick of burning incense around the edges of your doors and windows -- with the drapes tied back away from the edges -- to easily spot drafty areas as the flame moves or the smoke wafts.

Be sure that your doors and windows have tight seals to keep out extreme temperatures and to insure the best air quality in your home. If the air coming into your home is filtered through your heating and cooling system, you will have less chances of contracting air-borne illness.

In conclusion, it can be quite easy and affordable to improve your home's appearance. If you are doing it yourself and only working on simple projects it will become obviously worth the little money spent. There are many options and styles available to suit everyone's needs. Who doesn't want to walk into their home and feel aesthetically refreshed?

Christie Urges Florida Delegates to Back Romney Without Reservation

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie speaks during the Florida delegation breakfast Thursday at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor.

RICK RUNION | THE LEDGER

Published: Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 3:23 p.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, August 30, 2012 at 3:23 p.m.

PALM HARBOR | New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie urged the Florida delegation Thursday morning to follow his example in the presidential election's homestretch to sway voters: speak in an unapologetic and outspoken way about their party's ideas.

?American people don't want and can't tolerate plain vanilla leadership at this point,? he said.

The Republican governor also shared an anecdote about what led him to support Mitt Romney as early as October.

Before Romney stopped by his home for a meal, Christie told his children to make themselves scarce. Instead, his children vied for Romney's attention.

Patrick, his 12-year-old son, came within 2 feet of crashing into Romney on roller blades. A daughter somersaulted in his direction, announcing her love for gymnastics. Where some politicians would have been patronizing, Romney carried on with the children with genuine interest.

The display compelled Christie to offer his support for Romney that evening without hesitation.

?We've seen politicians who don't know how to interact with children,? he said. ?What I saw that day from Mitt Romney you can't fake. What it told me was something I didn't know until that day: this is a really involved father and a doting grandfather.?

Some delegates filed out of the Innisbrook ballroom in Palm Harbor after the half hour speech wishing Christie would have shared the humanizing account when he had the nation's attention in a keynote address at the convention earlier this week.

Linda Ivell, a Polk County delegate, seemed energized by Christie's story and a session by Newt Gingrich that argued the economic benefits of expanding oil and gas production on public land. Republicans need to improve how they market their ideas, she said.

?This isn't politics,? she said. ?This is really about answers. (Voters) want a path and they want knowledge.?

Holding forth at the convention this week, Christie said Democrats want to ?whistle a happy tune while driving us off a fiscal cliff.? He continued drawing distinctions between the parties Thursday morning, highlighting the work done by Republican governors across the country (but not mentioning Gov. Rick Scott, whose mother was seated in the audience).

?You may not think that you're ready to change horses but you are,? he said, as if speaking to undecided voters instead of a roomful of GOP delegates. ?The reason you are is because of the power of our ideas and the changes they are producing across the country.?

Christie said he has made statements in New Jersey that have made constituents shake their heads, but said an occasional gaff is better than making voters guess where you stand.

?Our problems are too big to be playing charades,? he said. ?Our problems are too big to send smoke signals.?

SEAL book raises questions about bin Laden's death

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a "point man" going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. "Less than five steps" from top of the stairs, he heard "suppressed" gunfire: "BOP. BOP." The point man had seen a "man peeking out of the door" on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

[Related: Obama's handwritten assault order]

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sites on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

In the account related by administration officials after the raid in Pakistan, the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to again raise questions as to whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, a lawyer from "either" the White House or Defense Department told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not "engage" him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should "detain him."

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs called "Walt" ? one of the pseudonyms the author used for his fellow SEALs ? was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes disparagingly that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the May 2011 raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to The Associated Press.

Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Obama Praises Romney for His Faith

Policy differences aside, President Obama says he admires Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for his family life, personal discipline and outward practice of his Mormon faith.

"He strikes me as somebody who is very disciplined. And I think that that is a quality that obviously contributed to his success as a private equity guy," Obama said in an interview with TIME magazine ahead of the Democratic National Convention next week.

"I think he takes his faith very seriously. And as somebody who takes my Christian faith seriously, I appreciate that he seems to walk the walk and not just be talking the talk when it comes to his participation in his church," he said.

The personal praise for Romney - and rare mention of his religious practice - goes beyond what Obama has publicly offered heretofore on the campaign trail. He regularly refers to his rival as a patriotic family man, even though he vehemently disagrees with his policies.

"This isn't a matter of who is more patriotic or who is more empathetic towards people or who is nicer," Obama said later in the TIME interview. "It's a hard-headed assessment of what makes our economy grow. And the facts are on my side in this argument. The question is whether while we're still digging ourselves out of this hole that we found ourselves in, that the facts will win the day."

The Obama campaign has said it would not make an issue of Romney's Mormonism during the lead up to the November election - a pledge which it so far has appeared to keep.

"We've said that's not fair game," senior Obama strategist David Axelrod said of both candidates' personal religious views in an interview with CNN earlier this year.

Republicans ready to roll, but Isaac clouds tone

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? For the thousands of Republican convention-goers who've been cooling their heels in Tampa, the party is finally on. But with New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast waiting fearfully to see where a massive storm makes landfall, politics has become an awkward enterprise and no one knows what sort of party it will turn out to be.

At least for now, the Republican National Convention will go on Tuesday according to its latest script: delivering Mitt Romney the presidential nomination he fought years to achieve, calling the party to unify around him and setting the stage for the final stretch of the hotly contested campaign to unseat President Barack Obama.

Romney was coming to Tampa on Tuesday, in time to see his wife's speech in the evening, although it was kept a mystery whether he would attend the convention before his big address Thursday night.

The high campaign season opens with Romney and Obama about even in the last of the pre-convention polls, with each candidate possessing distinct and important advantages. The Democrat is the more likable or empathetic leader; the Republican is more highly regarded as the candidate who can restore the economy, the top issue for voters.

Ann Romney's convention speech was designed to speak to that divide. It was an important part of the GOP's effort to flesh out her husband and present him to the nation as more than a successful businessman and the former Republican governor of a Democratic state, Massachusetts.

Isaac, the intensifying tropical storm bordering on a hurricane, skirted Tampa, a big relief for convention organizers worried about the safety of the host city and GOP delegates. But they remain saddled with the question of how to proceed with a political festival ? one devoted both to scoring points against Obama and firing up excitement for Romney ? under the shadow of a dangerous storm crawling toward the Gulf Coast.

Organizers essentially cut Monday from the schedule, calling the convention to order just long enough to recess it, and shoehorned their four-day showcase into the remaining three days. But even that was subject to change, depending on Isaac's whims.

Republicans plainly had more at stake in their convention week ? Democrats meet next week in Charlotte, N.C. ? but the Obama campaign also had to recalibrate its tactics as Gulf residents fled their homes or hunkered down. Vice President Joe Biden was called off a Romney-bashing trip to Florida and Obama's planned campaign travels were uncertain. On Monday, he worked on preparations for the storm, declaring a state of emergency in Louisiana, speaking with governors and directing federal officials to coordinate disaster relief with state and local officials along the Gulf Coast.

That's not to say partisanship has subsided with Isaac's gathering strength. Hardly.

On Twitter Monday night, Obama circulated a quotation from Women's Health Magazine suggesting that Republicans would take away women's right to contraception, which the Romney campaign denies. "Crazy as it sounds, the fight to limit or even ban birth control is a key issue in the upcoming presidential election," it said.

And Republicans made clear that Obama's performance is very much fair game for the convention. Reince Priebus, the Republican chairman, may have gone beyond Romney's comfort zone on that front when he told "CBS This Morning" that "we need to prosecute the president who seems to be in love with the sound of his own voice."

The suggestion of criminal proceedings against a president, however rhetorical, was a step beyond the ordinary, and Russ Schriefer, Romney's chief convention planner, appeared to dissociate himself from the remark. "I wouldn't define it that way and I wouldn't look at it that way," he told a news conference. "What we would want to do is define what President Obama has done over the last four years, how and why he's failed, and how his leadership has really failed the American people."

In a sign of just how stage-managed these conventions have become, the never-dull New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie did something he rarely does before a speech ? wrote down a full text ? as he prepared to deliver the keynote address Tuesday night. "They want you to work off a full text and that's fine," he told MSNBC. "I think my challenge up there is gonna be to be natural and be myself."

In the same interview, Christie pounced on Todd Akin, the Senate Republican candidate in Missouri who set off sparks with his inflammatory remark that a woman's body has a way of preventing pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." Romney is still trying to tamp down that distraction and get people thinking about the economy, not Republican abortion policy.

"In the end, these other guys don't matter," Christie said. "They're background noise ? Todd Akin in Missouri, who's a joke and should get out of the race and everybody knows it, except for him apparently."

Romney managed to stir up the pot over abortion, if briefly, when he said in a CBS interview that he opposes abortions except "in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother." Any exceptions made solely on the basis of a woman's health have drawn particularly fierce criticism from abortion foes for years, because they argue such an exception is so broad as to do nothing to limit the procedure.

But Romney's aides quickly said he wasn't, in fact, advocating an exemption for a woman's health. "He opposes abortion except for cases of rape, incest and where the life of the mother is threatened," said Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman. Still, his comment underscored his difference of opinion on the subject with his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, as well as with his own convention platform, which opposes all abortions.

With the economy seen as Romney's strong suit, and Obama's economic record considered a fat target in a time of persistent unemployment over 8 percent, Republicans, both from the stage and the floor, want to keep a laser focus on the subject.

"We've got to make the case that he is uniquely qualified in this hour," said Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., interviewed in the hall. "This week is about convincing the 10 percent of undecided voters that Romney has always been called to come out and fix broken organizations."

Even so, there were unmistakable if gentle nudges from Republicans who say it is also vital for Romney to broaden his appeal.

"This is Romney's threshold moment," Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, wrote in The Washington Post. "He must demonstrate that he would follow the example of other Republican presidents in addressing issues important to women."

An AP-GfK poll of registered voters conducted from Aug. 16-20 found Obama leading Romney 50 percent to 44 percent among women. That represented a narrowing of the gap by Romney since a survey in May, when the president led 54-39 among female voters.

Romney trailed badly among another key group. A Gallup poll taken between July 30 and Aug. 1 found Obama winning 60 percent support among Hispanic voters, and the Republican at 27 percent, little different from 64-29 earlier in the year.

Among seniors, the group most affected by a Medicare debate that has become central to the campaign, Romney led Obama by a margin of 52 percent to 42 percent in the recent AP-GfK poll. That was compared with 53-40 in May.

One third less life on planet Earth? Scientists offer better estimate of living biomass

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Previous estimates about the total mass of all life on our planet have to be reduced by about one third. This is the result of a study by a German-U.S. science team published in the current online issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

According to previous estimates about one thousand billion tons of carbon are stored in living organisms, of which 30% in single-cell microbes in the ocean floor and 55 % reside in land plants. The science team around Dr. Jens Kallmeyer of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and University of Potsdam has now revised this number: Instead of 300 billion tons of carbon there are only about 4 billion tons stored in subseafloor microbes. This reduces the total amount of carbon stored in living organisms by about one third.

Previous estimates were based on drill cores that were taken close to shore or in very nutrient-rich areas. "About half of the world's ocean is extremely nutrient-poor. For the last 10 years it was already suspected that subseafloor biomass was overestimated" explains Dr. Jens Kallmeyer the motivation behind his study. "Unfortunately there were no data to prove it." Therefore Kallmeyer and his colleagues from the University of Potsdam and the University of Rhode Island, USA, collected sediment cores from areas that were far away from any coasts and islands. The six-year work showed that there were up to one hundred thousand times less cells in sediments from open-ocean areas, which are dubbed "deserts of the sea" due to their extreme nutrient depletion, than in coastal sediments.

With these new data the scientists recalculated the total biomass in marine sediments and found these new, drastically lower values.

Despite of the high logistic and financial efforts for marine drilling operations there are more data of the abundance of living biomass in the sea floor than of their abundance on land. ?Our new results show the need to re-examine the other numbers as e.g. the amount of carbon in deep sediments on land," Jens Kallmeyer states. In particular the research into the ?Deep Biosphere" is still in the fledgling stages; this is life that can be found in kilometer's depth inside Earth's crust. The new findings contribute to a better picture of the distribution of living biomass on Earth.

The world?s longest bus seats 256 people

Germany is rolling out a mammoth 98-foot-long form of public transportation

The city of Dresden, Germany will soon be getting a monstrous addition to its public transportation system that can only be described as a train on wheels. Designed by Fraunhofer IVI and the Technical University Dresden, the three-section Autotram Extra Grand bus is 98 feet long and can carry 256 passengers, but doesn't require any special training for its driver.

Said to be as easily maneuverable as a commonly sized bus, the Autotram Extra Grand makes use of a computer system to aid its driver with turning. The system's primary purpose is to ensure that the rear section of the bus precisely follows the front and middle sections at all times. In addition to the sophisticated guidance system, the bus incorporates green technology in the form of a hybrid gas and electric engine that can travel five miles operating purely on battery power.

The Autoram Extra Grand will hit the streets of Dresden in October after completing safety testing outside of the city. Its makers say that they've already received inquiries from other cities around the world about getting their own versions of the bus, since it costs much less to put into operation and maintain than commuter rail systems, yet still carries a massive amount of passengers.

Merkel tries to calm uproar over eurozone plans

By Noah Barkin and Paul Carrel, Reuters

BERLIN/FRANKFURT - Angela Merkel tried to calm a growing storm over eurozone crisis strategy on Sunday after the Bundesbank likened ECB bond-buying plans to a dangerous drug and a conservative ally of the German leader said Greece should leave the currency bloc by next year.

The comments, from central bank chief Jens Weidmann and a senior figure in the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU), Alexander Dobrindt, point to mounting unease in Germany with the policies being used to combat the three-year old debt crisis.

Domestic criticism has narrowed Merkel's room for manoeuvre at a time when Greece is in dire need of more aid and policymakers are scrambling to prevent contagion from enveloping big countries like Spain and Italy.

Two days after Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras visited Berlin and made an impassioned plea for politicians there not to talk up the possibility of a Greek euro exit, Merkel herself sent a warning to allies who have said the euro zone would be better off without its weakest link.

"We are in a very decisive phase in combating the euro debt crisis," Merkel told public broadcaster ARD in an interview. "My plea is that everyone weigh their words very carefully."

Dobrindt, whose party is preparing for a regional election in Bavaria and the federal vote next autumn, told top-selling German daily Bild he expected Greece to leave the euro zone in 2013. His comments drew a swift rebuke from Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle who said "bullying" of euro members must stop.

In addition to Greece, policymakers have been sparing over European Central Bank President Mario Draghi's plans to buy up the bonds of Spain and Italy.

The ECB is assuming a greater role in the crisis while governments negotiate legal and political hurdles to coordinating a longer-term response. The bank's Italian head is expected to detail his plans after a Sept. 6 meeting of its 23-member governing council.

Merkel gave her tacit support to Draghi on a trip to Canada earlier this month and reiterated in the ARD interview that she believed the ECB's policies were in line with its mandate to ensure stable prices in the bloc.

Addictive
But Weidmann, a former economic adviser to Merkel, said in a front-page interview in influential German magazine Der Spiegel that the bond buys could violate rules against the ECB providing outright financing to governments.

"Such a policy is for me close to state financing via the printing press," Weidmann told Spiegel. "In democracies, it is parliaments and not central banks that should decide on such a comprehensive pooling of risks."

Financing governments has long been a taboo for Germany. Weidmann's predecessor as Bundesbank chief, Axel Weber, quit last year in protest at the ECB's existing, but now dormant, bond-buying scheme - the Securities Markets Programme (SMP).

"We should not underestimate the risk that central bank financing can become addictive like a drug," Weidmann said.

The Bundesbank retains substantial influence within Germany and on financial markets due to its inflation-fighting credentials but, as just one of 17 constituents at the ECB, it is unlikely it could scupper Draghi's plan.

Asked in the television interview whether she supported Weidmann, Merkel praised him for speaking out about his doubts and said she saw strong Bundesbank influence within the ECB as positive. But she took care not to voice any support for his criticism of Draghi's policies.

Central bank sources told Reuters on Friday that the ECB is considering setting yield band targets under the new bond-buying programme to allow it to keep its strategy shielded and avoid speculators trying to cash in.

Weidmann said setting such yield band targets was a "sensitive notion" but rejected suggestions that he was isolated on the ECB Governing Council in having such reservations.

"I hardly believe that I am the only one to get a stomach ache over this," he said.

Dobrindt was more direct, saying Draghi risked passing into the history books as the "currency forger of Europe".

Sticking to commitments
With the 'troika' of the EU, ECB and International Monetary Fund preparing to return to Greece to assess the plight of the euro zone's weakest link, Austria's chancellor said Athens should get more time to repay its debts, provided it sticks to reforms.

"I see quite a good chance that we will arrive at an outcome with Greece that the Greeks stick to their agreements with the EU but in return get more time for the repayment," Werner Faymann told newspaper Oesterreich.

"The most important thing is that the Greeks stick to the reforms and savings targets agreed with us. If that is guaranteed, I am in favour of a delay in the repayment," he said, adding that the delay could be two or three years.

But Germany's finance and economy ministers both reaffirmed their opposition to any easing of the timeframe for Greece, stressing that giving it more time would mean giving it more money. Samaras has said he needs more time but not more cash.

Samaras elicited no promises from Merkel or from French President Francois Hollande, whom the Greek leader met in Paris on Saturday. No final decisions on Greece are expected before the troika delivers its report in October.

Merkel said she had come away from her talks with Samaras convinced that he was serious about the Greek reform drive, but made clear that the pressure on Athens was extremely high. "Every day counts," she said.

Interview: President Obama on Romney's 'extreme' views

On the eve of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, President Obama says that a President Romney would not 'stand in the way' if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

By Ben Feller,?Associated Press / August 25, 2012

President Barack Obama speaks during an interview with The Associated Press at the White House on Aug. 23. His comments come ahead of the GOP convention opening on Monday in Tampa, Fla.

President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla . In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Governor Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

(Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.)

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

At least four killed in Ivory Coast gunbattle

ABIDJAN (Reuters) - At least four people were killed in an exchange of fire between soldiers and unidentified gunmen at an army checkpoint in southern Ivory Coast, the West African nation's defence minister said on Sunday.

The world's top cocoa grower is struggling to cope with a spate of armed raids on police and military installations this month, raising fears of renewed instability following a conflict last year that killed 3,000 people.

The government has accused a network of supporters of former president Laurent Gbagbo, both within Ivory Coast and abroad, of organizing the raids to terrorize the population and scare off foreign investors.

Gbagbo's political allies have dismissed the allegations and accused the government of using the violence as an excuse to crack down on the opposition. Several leading members of Gbagbo's party have been arrested over the past week.

Defence Minister Paul Koffi Koffi said a gunbattle erupted on Saturday in the village of Irobo, about 80km (50 miles) west of the commercial capital Abidjan, when soldiers at a roadblock tried to stop a vehicle carrying a group of armed men.

"There was a high-speed chase. When our men tried to stop the attackers at a checkpoint, they opened fire on our soldiers," Koffi Koffi told Reuters.

The minister said it was still unclear how many people had been killed and wounded in the exchange of fire, which took place at 11 a.m. (1100 GMT).

"The initial toll was four dead. Some civilians were hit. The death toll has risen among the assailants, but we do not want to give a figure yet. We are currently gathering and verifying the information," he said.

Two suspected gunmen were captured, Koffi Koffi said.

The army has been carrying out clean-up operations in the area after battles in the nearby town of Dabou last week in which gunmen attacked army and gendarme bases and freed more than 100 prisoners from the local jail.

Before Saturday's violence, at least 15 people had been killed in a series of attacks over the last three weeks.

Gbagbo is awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court in The Hague over crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the war that erupted last year after he rejected his election defeat by current President Alassane Ouattara.

After the war ended, Ouattara's government issued around two dozen international warrants for former high-ranking military and political officials close to Gbagbo, most of them believed to be living in Ghana, Benin and Togo.

On Saturday Ivorian and Ghanaian officials announced the arrest of Gbagbo's budget minister Justin Kone Katinan, who had been living as a political refugee in Ghana but remained a vocal supporter of Gbagbo and a critic of Ouattara's government.

Ivory Coast had been seeking his arrest for alleged economic crimes and said on Saturday it was negotiating his extradition.

Gendarmes arrested Laurent Akoun, secretary-general of Gbagbo's FPI party, at a military checkpoint in the town of Adzope, about 100km north of Abidjan on Sunday, his chief of staff told Reuters. Akoun had been due to attend a meeting of party militants there.

The FPI's deputy secretary-general, Alphonse Douati, was arrested last week and accused of being involved in this month's attacks.

New UN envoy 'scared' by Syria task

New UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said that he was "scared" at the size of the task of ending the Syria conflict.

The former Algerian foreign minister spoke as he started meetings with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, UN ambassadors and other top officials before replacing Kofi Annan on September 1.

"When you called me, I told you that I was honored, flattered, humbled and scared. I am still in that frame of mind," Brahimi told Ban before their meeting at UN headquarters.

"I will definitely give this my very, very best. I know a few people in Syria and in the region," added Brahimi, who as an Arab League envoy brokered the 1989 accord that ended Lebanon's civil war.

Ban said that the new envoy faced a "crucial task" as the Syrian war worsens. The UN leader made a new plea for the divided UN Security Council to unite behind Brahimi.

The Algerian diplomat has already been criticized by some Syrian opposition groups for not calling for President Bashar al-Assad to step down.

Brahimi said, however, that the Syrian people "will be our first masters."

"We will consider their interests above and before anyone else. We will try to help as much as we can, we will not spare any effort," he added.

Annan, a former UN chief, ended his six-month bid to bring peace to Syria, complaining about the lack of international support for his efforts to make Assad implement an agreed peace plan.

As the war grows increasingly bloody, Brahimi has indicated that he will try new tactics. He is due to spend a week in New York holding talks with UN political, humanitarian and other officials and diplomats to set up his mission, officials said.

UN officials insist that Annan's six-point plan and a plan of action agreed by the major powers at a meeting in Geneva on June 30 are still the basis for any accord with Assad.

"That peace plan remains intact," said UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, who added that Annan's plan and the Geneva accord calling for a political transition in Syria, are "building blocks for Mr Brahimi to use."

"Of course, he will be looking with other UN officials at how this is going to be taken forward. But at this point, we can't really comment on what that might be," Nesirky told reporters.

Ban, "deeply concerned" about the spiraling violence, said that Brahimi was taking on "a very important, crucial task, to bring peace and stability and the promotion of human rights in Syria."

He called Brahimi an internationally respected statesman of "extraordinary talent and experience in the region."

"The longer this fighting goes on, the more people will be killed, the more people will suffer," Ban said.

"It is crucially important that the Security Council, the whole United Nations System is supporting your work."

Later, Brahimi met with France's UN envoy Gerard Araud to discuss "the challenges of his mission and the situation in Syria," French diplomats said.

The pair "agreed to hold an informal meeting with Security Council members which will take place soon," they said.

The five permanent members of the Security Council are seriously split over Syria. Russia and China have blocked three resolutions on the conflict that could have led to sanctions against Assad. They in turn have accused western nations of only seeking regime change.

With Syrian activists now putting the toll from the 17-month-old conflict at more than 24,500, the first test of international unity will be at a UN Security Council ministerial meeting on August 30 on the humanitarian impact of the civil war.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is scheduled to chair the meeting as France is Security Council president for the month of August. It is not yet clear which other ministers will attend.

Should you Buy a Holiday Home to Compete with Hotels?

So you have decided to buy a second home which you would like to not only use as a vacation home for yourself and your family, but also to start your vacation rental business. Because you will be relying on travelers to rent your holiday home, invariably when you are short listing properties to choose from, you will have many questions in your mind like: Does the location witness a lot of tourists? Are there many hotels in the location? Is the ratio of hotels to number of tourists visiting the area well enough to my liking?

Holiday home versus hotels

VIEW OF A HOLIDAY HOME IN SRI LANKA: Each lodging ? be it a hotel or a vacation home ? has unique advantages and core customer groups. So for holiday home owners it?s not about competing with hotels and more about building a niche clientele for yourself.

If these are the questions you have in mind or more aptly if the anticipation of having to compete with hotels holding you back from buying a home and eventually starting a vacation rental business, here are some facts to help you breathe easy:

1. Most successful vacation homes in touristy places despite having to rub shoulders with hotels have successfully thrive because they have created a niche clientele for themselves.

2. Travelers stay in holiday homes not because there are no hotel rooms available, but because they love to.

3. For an average family staying in a holiday home is much cheaper than taking multiple rooms in a hotel.

4. Renters prefer staying in a holiday home because it offers more privacy which even a luxury hotel can?t because they have to accommodate other guests to remain profitable.

5. While hotels may offer cheaper room rates, the cost of food is relatively much higher. Vacation rentals, ideally equipped with a fully operation kitchens means the food bill of guests are much lower. Renters are aware of that and thus opt to stay in a holiday home.

6. For a family with small kids staying in a 1000 square feet space is more fun and stress-free than being bound to a 400 square feet hotel room ? renters of holiday home understand this pretty well.

7. Because every holiday home is unique in itself, many travelers love this fact where there is an element of surprise in exploring something new. The same cannot be said of hotels, where most of them have the same to offer. ??

Based on these facts you will probably now understand that running a holiday home business doesn?t necessarily mean that you have to compete with a hotel. Unlike hotels, although your main motive of running a holiday home is to profit from the rental, you can do so by creating a unique clientele base.

Additionally, in a vacation rental business, past guests and referrals have a greater importance than in the hotel business. Because travelers wanting to rent a holiday home are more likely to do so if the property is referred by a friend or a family member, if you are buying a property to convert it into a holiday home then this the first tip to keep in mind when you start on your marketing strategy. So what do you do when you are looking to buy a property to ensure that you need not have to compete with hotels:

First, if your choice of location is a major tourist destination, try not to go for a cramped apartment. Instead it is better to invest in a spacious house/ villa. People ideally look for space in a location which is crowded with tourists. As such, chances of travelers booking your holiday home is much higher if the property is spacious and offers a lot of exterior space.

Second, try to buy a property which has something extra than those in the locality. For this reason you will notice that a heritage home despite being high on rental sees more bookings than even hotels or other modern vacation rentals in the same neighborhood.

Third, look for a property that can provide or already has a couple of value-added amenities other than just rooms. A swimming pool or a gazebo or a Jacuzzi can go a long way in attracting guests away from hotels.

Fourth, don?t go by the assumption that the city centre is the best location to buy a holiday home. Not necessarily ? properties in locations near a major tourist city which can provide a good unobstructed view of the surroundings is always a better option.

Lastly, before you decide to buy a property to convert it into a vacation rental make sure you can easily get a support staff. Cooks, caretakers, house-cleaners, etc. are essential for running a holiday home more efficiently. So make sure you don?t have to sweat to get them.

TD Charitable Foundation Supports EMHS Youth Healthy Lifestyle ...

Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS) is pleased to announce the TD Charitable Foundation, funded by TD Bank, has awarded the Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program with a $50,000 grant. The program was created in 2008 as a childhood obesity prevention project.

The Let?s Go! program uses four easy-to-remember and consistent healthy lifestyle messages throughout EMHS communities in the form of 5-2-1-0: Five or more fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of screen time; one or more hours of physical activity; and zero sugary drinks, more water and low-fat milk. Let?s Go! has 10 strategies for success and four healthy habits that are both evidence-based. The 10 strategies align with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention?s Recommended Community Strategies and Measurements to Prevent Obesity in the US, and also align with recommended Institute of Medicine strategies.

Amber Desrosiers, EMHS Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program coordinator says, ?Maine ranks thirty-ninth among states in the percentage of overweight or obese youth. Childhood obesity places Maine youth at both immediate and future risk of poor health. Nutrition and physical activity are the primary determinants of obesity, both of which can lead to diabetes, and suggests a need for prevention interventions involving local organizations and stakeholders. We are grateful that the TD Charitable Foundation recognizes the seriousness of childhood obesity in this region. Because of their generosity, EMHS will be able to provide much needed resources and tools to children in 272 towns in Aroostook, Hancock, Kennebec, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Somerset, and Washington counties.?

The funding provided by TD Charitable Foundation will benefit local rural communities and allow EMHS to complete its five year project to build healthy childhood nutrition and fitness habits into local cultures and evaluate the effectiveness of these programs.

To learn more about the Youth Healthy Lifestyle Program and 5-2-1-0, visit www.emhs.org/5210.

EMHS and its member organizations across central, eastern, and northern Maine share best practices and ongoing quality initiatives to improve access to quality care. Together We?re Stronger!

A staunch commitment to active involvement in the local community is a vital element of the TD Bank philosophy. TD Bank, America?s Most Convenient Bank? and the TD Charitable Foundation provide support to affordable housing, financial literacy and education, and environmental initiatives, many of which focus on improving the welfare of children and families.

Republicans not alone in hot, sticky Florida

Republicans have a perfectly logical reason to book their national convention in Florida, a swing state that Mitt Romney must win if he is to defeat President Barack Obama.

But who else in their right minds would consider holding such a large-scale event just when the state is at its hottest, stickiest and most vulnerable to hurricanes?

The answer? Lots of people.

Why? Because when the uncomfortable heat and humidity rise, hotel and catering prices drop. Meanwhile, popular venues that are impossible to snag in high season are quite often available.

That is appealing to many. Everyone from Star Wars fans and purveyors of adult entertainment, to beauty specialists, dancers, journalists, real estate agents and Asian business groups are planning to gather in the Sunshine State in the coming weeks.

Take September, one of the most active months for hurricanes, when nearly 30 events are scheduled at convention centers in Tampa, Miami, and Orlando.

"The calendar has been full the last couple of summers I've been here," said George Aiello, marketing manager for the Miami Beach Convention Center.

Here are some of the activities scheduled for those intrepid souls who plan to venture south in these swampiest of months.

---
